If you think for one minute that Paul Cullen wouldn't bleed primrose and blue if he was cut open, then your even more of an idiot than you come across.
You call yourself Wilderspool memories christ well it must be a short one'"
Listen he says to widnes fans if you want to boo go and watch warrington. As steve51 says it's a direct pop at us. He may well bleed primrose and blue,we all do. But he was an average player and he is an average coach. I wonder if he looked on with envy when wire won the cup and Lee Briers said that Tony Smith was "the best coach by a country mile"???????????? I bet he did.
My wilderspool memories go back 30+ years,I have seen it all before. Idiot? Me? For having an opinion which incidently others agree with? I think not. The idiotic comment is "if you want to boo go and watch warrington." Try and gloss over it all you like,it's a pop at the wire fans who when enough was enough certainly let him know it was time to quit. Those chants obviously still ring loud and clear inside his head.

I certainly did make the trip. I did not critisise smith though as he had only just taken over and I knew he needed time to impliment his methods. 29-8-2009 showed me he knew his stuff. To take a team from bottom of the league to cup winners in 5 months requires a "special one." A really top coach who knows his stuff backwards and inside out. Bleed primrose and blue he may well have done, but Paul Cullen was never in a million years going to be a Tony Smith. That's my opinion.

| I think its a clever comment really, because the connonations can be judged in different ways. I wouldnt jump down his throat about it though.

| Quote: Wires71 "These are laudable sentiments Geordie and I agree with some of them but TS has done far more than just get rid of Gleeson. I do not believe for one minute that PC would have achieved what TS has in the same time period because he is not as capable as a coach. Also you talk of attacking rugby - I would argue we play even more attacking rugby now under TS.'"
Agreed. We've probably made more offloads this season than we did during Cullen's entire reign as Wire coach. And the major difference is, there is a team bond which is examplified in our defence, which not so long ago, at times, was scary.

| To be honest, I think it was simply a poor choice of words that can have several connotations. I have to admit when I first read it; I thought it was a pop at Warrington.
However, I can also see the other viewpoint insofar that Rugby League in general doesn’t want the boo-boys. So his comments may not necessarily be directed at Warrington in a negative way.
I am sure there is some pride at stake as well, not only at Tony Smith taking over, but going on to achieve what he so desperately wanted. That shows Cullen is Wire through-and-through. But I also consider him to be a thorough professional and his comments were not meant in a derogatory manner whatsoever towards Warrington, but to persecute the idiots.
The other thing to bear in mind is that last season’s Challenge Cup triumph really put a huge glossy sheen over what was in all honesty a relatively poor league performance (granted, that did improve under TS after a horrendous start, but was still not quite good enough to achieve the play-offs).
Of course, this season is something else – we have finally found that consistency we so craved. We now just need to have that bit of luck with the top teams – especially Saints. And from my point of view, I would be delighted with a top 4 spot, even if we don’t actually end up wining any silverware. Anything else will simply be icing on the cake for me!!
All I ask is that we compete and play entertaining rugby – and we are doing that in abundance. It fills me with real pride to be a Warrington supporter!!
So, in their own way, both Paul Cullen and Tony Smith deserve all the plaudits for what each of them achieved at Warrington (albeit for very different reasons).

| You'd be mad to argue that Smith has not been an improvement on Cull, or that Cull had much to do with the Challenge Cup win. And people know how much I love the guy.
However, you'd quite clearly be wrong to interpret his comments as an attack on Warrington fans. It's so obvious he's saying that if you want to boo your own team, then you might as well go and watch their local rivals. He knows it's a big insult to a Widnes fan to tell them to go and support the Wire. He's saying that booing your team is just as disloyal as watching your rivals. He might be wrong in that analysis but it doesn't mean he's slagging us off.
Of course he's probably bitter about the end of his time at Warrington. It was awful. Imagine having been a lifelong Warrington fan and hearing boos ring out around the ground.
However, he's nowhere near as bitter or vindictive as some people on here.

| You may hear a drum but I can categorically say that it wasn't me and the simple reason being is that I absolutely loved PC as the Warrington coach and for everything he had done at Warrington. Sure we could all see it was going sour but he didn't deserve that.
On the day in question I was of course stood in my usual place but as soon as that demonstration started i walked away and was actually stood at the front talking to Rugbychick and Foz, in no way was I involved in it.

| Not sure, maybe someone should email him on Sky ask him to clear that one up ?
PC is a Wire, took us up a level from what we were but he had his limitations and TS as raised them again to another level.
Wire do have a lot of boo boys so even if he was 'having a dig' i personally wouldn't disagree with him.
I don't think he was, in fact i take it as a back handed compliment, my take on it is if you want to watch winning rugby Wire are a short ride down the road.
Even if PC had never been a Wire in any capacity i still think he would have said the same thing. If he'd been the Bradford coach i would go as far to say he would have said the same thing only mentioning Leeds instead.

| Quote: Wilderspool memories "Is Paul cullen now biting the hand that fed him for so many years, his "beloved" Warrington? Is he claiming that all us wire fans of whom he once said he was proud are merely "boo boys" who boo regardless? If so he is insulting the club and the fans! Yes Paul, the fans did boo when you were in charge at Warrington. The reason was because everyone could see that a team full if highly talented players was not performing to it's best. The same mistakes were being made week in week out,no solutions to the problems were being found and matches in which we had healthy leads were being lost because the team could not defend and play for 80 minutes. There is a word for that Paul................coaching!!!!!!!!!!! Wake up and smell the coffee Paul Cullen, within 18 months of you leaving Warrington that same bunch of players who could not beat an egg with you in charge had won the challenge cup,the booing had stopped, games that should be won were being won and not thrown away. Now the fans at widnes are "boo boys." Who is the Widnes coach again? I wonder where the problem really lies eh PC?'"
yeh what he said

Funny that, cos i was stood amongst the people who stayed in the stand for a short while after the game. Geordie wasn't amongst them, he was in the apron watching up at us, there was a person with a smaller drum stood within the 'protest' party however i think he explained on here following the game that he wasn't protesting against cull but supporting. Which at the time i thought was a strange comment, or strange thing to do considering what was occuring.
When i got bored i walked down the steps and stood and had a natter with geordie briefly, then i left, at no point was he involved with what was going on, so i reckon you owe him an apology and need to buy a better phone.

| Quote: Geordie "Oh how short some of your'e memories are!!
In 2002 Paul Cullen was a god with Warrington Fans, he had done the unthinkable and kept us up after the dark days of Anderson and Plange.
He then went on to take us to the playoffs for the first time on a squad whos combined wages where the 3rd lowest in the league.
He helped lead us to the HJ and assembled a quality side that played some of the best attacking rugby I had ever seen, unfortunatley they couldn't defend as well.
Ok things turned sour, what if Paul Cullen had wanted to implement some of the things that TS has since he came in but the board didnt allow him or wouldnt back him. Paul Cullen wanted shot of M Gleeson but the clubs directors wouldnt let him, smith comes in and it happens within weeks. None of us will ever know if Cullen could have acheived what TS has with the same support and backing.
I read the comments as if you want to boo go to Warrington where their is little to boo at. Remeber the game against Leeds where all the young lads had to play, Warrington Fans certainly didnt boo their efforts at any point.
Cullen didnt take us to the next level,TS has but as Warrington fans we still have an awful lot to thank Paul Cullen for.'"
my god you saved me a whole lot of typing, without cull we would not be in top flight rugby, anyone with any history watching the club would know this.
it pee's me off this anti cull sentiment, plange anderson et al, fair enough!

i dont mean after the game.
the chanting for cullen out, started after the interception try, and like you said you started to walk down after the game, im on about during the game, i was there and seen it for myself. i reckon you need to think back , cos ive never forgot and never will,

Going sour? It had gone sour a while back. PC should have fallen on his sword way before and done the honourable thing. Instead he stayed until it was clearly untenable and the fans turned on him.
