The team used to be selected by a selection committe like the cricket team is now. The head of selectors was a senior figure at Dewsbury RLFC

Really difficult this as I went to my first game at Wilderspool in 67, but I'll go for:

Mike Gregory
Bobby Greenhough
John Woods
Parry Gordon
John Bevan

Couldn't find room for Mark Roberts or Jiffy in the 5 unfortunately. Robbo was superb and would have been one of the best players we ever had if it hadn't been for chronic knee problems. Remember him playing out of position at centre at Central park (89?) up against Kevin Iro. Robbo slung him round the pitch like a rag doll. Great stuff

Good list!

About time somebody mentioned Chissy - he used to look like a cartoon character with his tiny little feet (twinkle toes) and his small patch of hair on his balding forehead.

Hesford took some stcik from opposition fans, and our own at times, but I have never seen anyone so reliable under a high ball - if he didn't catch it we got a penalty.

My 2 best memories of Bob were
(i) against Wigan when he hurdled over a player on the ground and and caught Henderson Gill with a knee to the head (but made it look accidental), and then he picked him up like a rag doll to try and show the ref he was okay, then just dropped him back on his face.
(ii) the first game after we had a big W painted in the in goal area he went in wide of the posts at the Fletcher End, dummied placing the ball down just short of the little half back who was trying to stop him going under the sticks, only to deck him with a cracking hand off, trample over him and dive theatrically onto the W for the try, and the rapturous ovation from the home fans

Didn't William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run, someone should really tell Rugby Union. www.squadbuilder.co.uk:1883.jpg

a close call. i only went for ford because of his pure unpredictability. dessie was a legend, no question but some of my earlies and fondest memories were of ford doing something unexpected in the shadow of snookers. would i have him over dessie in a team had they been at the wire at the same time, probably not, but for memories and wanting to make me go and watch warrington, phil ford had a big influence on that. when dessie came to warrington, i was already hooked, but ford was part of what got me hooked.

it may be possible, that ford had a better strike rate than dessie too....

Ford was very unpredictable. I must admit I don't have him down as having that great a strike rate, I will have to check that out.

Edit:

Ford scored 57 tries in 112 appearances, 1 try every 1.96 games. Des, 69 tries in 182 games, 1 try every 2.64 games.

I am really surprised at that. Cracking call!

Really struggling with this but I am surprised at the number selecting Steve Hesford. Much as I liked him as a player he always struck me as a bit limited. If talking about full backs how about Dave Lyons?

Agree Hesford wasn't the best in open play but as a kicker he was the best I've seen in a Wire shirt. He isn't the club's record points scorer for nowt. Plus the pie eaters hated him which means he must have been good. Never forget him wacking Graham West while trotting back after a conversion. Priceless, ref didn't see it and he got off scott free.

ABW.:

Parry Gordon (always my favourite player).
Mike Gregory.
Dave Chisnall.
John Bevan.
Ken Parr.

I was at the Dewsbury match some people are talking about. Parry did get 5 tries, but from what I can remember, Alan Bates cried off with some injury. It was an absolute travesty that he never played for GB, anyone remember those 'Gordon Specials?' Scrum about 40 yards out near touch, Parry straight round the blindside, little dummy inside and under the posts. Great memories.
Kenny Parr was a superb ballplaying back row who for 2 seasons made barry Briggs and Ray Clarke look like worldbeaters. Then he got a bad knee injury and was never the same again. I think he got 1 cap for GB, against France about 1968.

Have to include JD - only one man of steel from Wire.
Others?
Most have been mentioned, but John Woods is a fave of mine along with Bateman.
