| Quote: getdownmonkeyman "His loan spell for us as a 17/18 year old was pretty much all at six.'"
RL fans made up fact of the day.
He spent about 40 minutes at six in that loan spell, that was away at Saints when Briers had been injured and we'd started with Mathers on the wing and Domic at six. We switched Mathers there at half-time, we lost the game by 70 points.
The other games he played wing or centre, Briers and Wood were the halfback partnership.

| I hope Mathers goes well for you.
He's a great lad to have at your club as he's so entusiastic and just looks like he loves playing the game but his confidence just seemed shot at Wigan. I think the 2 bad injuires really effected his form and he always looked nervous going into collisions.
It may take the odd dodgy preformence from him but if you give him a few months regular games i'm confident Smith will get him back something like the player he used to be.

My eyes must have deceived me when he came off the bench in a game at Wilderspool and went to stand off.

Jonny friggin Vegas came off the bench for Saints in a testimonial game but it doesnt make him either a rugby player or a second rower.

Again, nobody is saying he is a stand off, he can play the position, just like Riley can fullback and wing.

| You have to laugh at saintc. He is the best poster on RL fans at backing himself into a corner and then inventing an ingenious (but fallacious) way out!
I don't think Mathers is a No 6 either, but he [icould [/ibe one day - and - try as you might - to say otherwise does equal accepting that Leon Pryce should not be playing at 6 for Saints.

| Actually, I'm a bit confused by this whole Mathers at 6 lark.
Looking back at his time with us, he started 4 games (3 on the wing, 1 at centre) and 3 sub appearances. He may have come on at 6, but IMO that doesn't mean much. Subs cover positions.
For the rest of his British career he has played Fullback, with one appearance at 6 last season for Wigan.
I would class him as a fullback, who could cover the threequarter line. I wouldn't want him anywhere near the halves.
Isn't this like saying Briers is a Halfback or a Fullback?

| In general rugby fans like the idea of playing a player in a different position, remember people used to say Mark Gleeson would be a good six, or Chris Bridge should play loose forward etc.
What they don't like is when a Super League coach actually goes and does it. Then you will hear the coach bagged because he plays people in the wrong positions!

| Quote: just_browny "At 6, his defensive frailties can be more easily covered over.'"
I disagree with this especially at pro level, any player that has a known defensive weakeness will be targeted by a good opposition coach. Lee Briers is a prime example of this, watch back a few saints games and look at the amount of times they targeted and isolated him.
In the modern day game their are no hiding places for poor defenders as they will get found out sooner rather than later and it can be the difference between a win and a loss, just look at the state of our defence over the years which Lee Briers has been a part of, us the fans have know his weakness for years and so have a lot of coaches.

| Quote: saintc "why?
Because I dont agree that a guy that has spent his entire senior squad career as a fullback has overnight been turned into a stand off? He may or may not become a good 6 but I dont understand why so many people in so many different threads say it with certainty as if this is one of his positions that he plays when he has barely played it.'"
A bit like Leon Pryce eh?

Ive already acknowleged that, however moving Pryce to 6 did work but people rightfully at the time questioned whether it would or not just like I am with Mathers now.

Stand offs have more defensive work to do than fullbacks.
