I'm not a penny hater by any stretch of the imagination... I don't hate any of our players... He just seems very limited in defence and attack... Sure he can outrun most players with ball inhand.....but he appears to be able to do very little else... However this is just my opinion... I would like to read other peoples opinions on what else he offers a SL team.

It's not just about his top end pace, in his first season he used subtle changes in pace to beat defenders whilst hugging the touchline - not many players have that ability.

Most RL wingers (incl Riley who is adored on here) simply run eyeballs out and either get bundled into touch or are forced back inside toward the covering defenders.

Watch some of Penny's tries from his first season again, and the number of defenders who think they have him lined up and then miss is very impressive.

so he slows down then speeds up again ?

Sorry I'm just not buying into that as a skillfull attribute.... Anyone with alot of pace is bound to do that alot.

I'm not rileys biggest fan... But I think he has alot more to offer as a rugby league player than penny.

But that's my point, they don't.

Anyway, that kind of belittling of a key rugby skill could be applied to anyone - was Jiffy's sidestep him just beating a defender by just changing direction every now and then, did Phil Blake score tries for fun by just kicking it and running after it?

It's the subtle differences that set players apart, and Penny is an expert at beating a plyer who has an angle to intercept him whilst running in a dead straight line.

Riley might be a more complete player right now, but Peny's potential is far greater.

I'm not convinced icon_smile.gif

i think he is a luxury that cannot be accomodated in a modern day top flight rugby league side..... I would very much like to be wrong though.

I just dont see any improvement in the glaring defficiencies his game appears to posses.

When at Widnes his defence improved ten fold... against Fax in NRC semi he saved 3 or 4 tries on his own and looked solid under the high ball! Yet after the 'loyal'' supporters got on his back after like one knock on... confidence shot and basic mistakes returned!

he is a good finisher , his pace is what makes the headlines about him but he can offer much more, we all know his defence was weak but the widnes loan helped him and he has become better, still aint good enough for our side but i hope he one day is good enough and we have 2 good homegrown wingers

I think you're wrong, I think JWP is right and no, I don't know him.....

I can't remember Penny ever going into touch, he would always look for an offload option, his ability under the high ball is superb and his enthusiasm infectious. In the 2008 season despite taking unfair stick he made less errors than Chris Hicks and made more clean breaks. He also missed only 2 more tackles. His stats also compared very well with Chris Riley's that season, making 4 times as many offloads.

Don't get me wrong, Penny's frame is slight and his ball security in the tackle has been poor at times as well as the odd brain fart but, for me, what he brings far outweighs the downsidesI can't think of another winger in SL who scare opposition fans more given half a yard.

Starting winger for me but I suspect another season of toughening up in NL1 awaits him.

Penny and Clarke have both lost their 1-13 squad numbers it would appear.

Hicks has got 5 which seems strange as I thought he requested 23 last year and would therefore keep it. Either way that should quash any rumours that we've seen the last of him.

Yeah, why on earth would we want a winger who can outrun most players icon_rolleyes.gif icon_rolleyes.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Penny is great for the club and i hope will become one of the clubs greats. It's easy to knock him then wax lyrical about your favoured players who probably made as many if not more mistakes and had less of an impact on the game. I heard so much bleating from the gobby tosspots in the south stand it just made me cringe.

For years the fans have been bleating on about not producing talented players, then Penny comes along and takes the game by storm, makes a few mistakes and he's then villified.

I just don't get it.

i still struggle to contemplate why none of these obvious deficienses didn't show up in 2007 when we had a horrid patched up team at the end of the season and they only did at last year.
