| Whoever it is will get my backing. I will reserve judgement until I see what they produce on the pitch. I just hope they get the main target rather than best of the rest that's available as we seem to end up with every time our Karl goes to australia.
Powell wouldn't go far wrong and I'd back sean wane to win us a trophy or 2. It's a big decision this, saints and Wigan are surging ahead of us at the minute and we have generally punched below our weight for 2 or 3 years.

| Quote: Lord Tony Smith "We lost 8 games in 10 (6 in a row) during that cup win. That's relegation form. The cup win glossed over the cracks and barring that one off performance our performances were awful in the league. I'll never forget how bad we were during that Cas play off game.'"
You are right that we were poor. But ...we finished 4th in the League and won the Cup.
As I have said ... no club in the league would have sacked their coach and you know that really.
We'd have been taken to court for unfair dismissal.
Anyway he's going now. So there will be no need for anyone to moan.

2019 Challenge Cup Winners and finished 4th. Lost by 12-14 to Castleford in play offs.
We were going like a bomb until Blake Austin got injured (I think at Catalan) and struggled for form even on his return.
Played whole season without one of our main half-backs (Brown) so Austin's injury was a big blow.
Beat St Helens to win cup with Currie & Patton at half back.

Saints have sacked coaches after winning them the grand final. They also sacked a club legend who has a statue outside the stadium. As much as I dislike them, they are ruthless and that is what you need to stay at the top.

Leeds as well with McDermott.
Just seen a tweet, ‘If Warrington crave this elusive grand final as much as they say they do then there is only one man for the job’. Over to you Mr Fitzpatrick.

| Not read all of this thread, but in my view as an initial reaction it's a crazy time to announce this.
What sort of message does it send the players and fans for the coming season?
Either 'let's do it for Steve' or 'his heart wont be in it, is he that bothered?'
There's never an ideal time, but I suppose you could argue that it's out of the way and ends the 'will he/won't he' speculation.
Now it'll transfer to who's going to come in. (Wayne, McDermott etc).
Personally doubt he'd have got an extension.
Can't blame him for wanting to go back. Covid has affected many lives and being so far from the warm summer beaches in Sydney must be difficult - as opposed to fishing on the banks of the Mersey in winter.....
Either way, even though I didn't/ don't like his footy tactics I wish him all the best.

You do realise that it isn't just down to KF don't you? The coach has to be available, he has to want to come here, we have to be able to pay him what he wants, his family have to agree and those are just off the top of my head.
I appreciate that the desire to win the GF tops all other factors for you but even so...

I agree that Wigan and Saints seem to be surging ahead of us based on last year and recruitment but I'm not convinced they are head coach wise as both sets of fans wanted their respective coaches gone for large parts of last season.
I wouldn't mind Wane stepping in, I think he'd do a good job and will have a point to prove, if nothing else it would be out of our system.
A big NO from me re Powell can't stand the guy (obviously I don't know him personally) he's far too moany and hasn't really delivered

| What about Shadwells? I always thought they had more class & style than Barry Cooper.

I know about the club legend and that was an obvious and unremarkable sacking.
But which coaches (obviously 2 or more) did they sack after winning them the grand final.
What were the dates of the win and how soon after were they sacked? I will check up on this as it seems a strange way to reward success.

Hanley won it in 99 and was sacked in 2000. Millward won 2 and I think it took them a little longer to sack him. Either way, they weren't afraid to sack winning coaches if there was a better alternative out there.

Yes I'm well aware of that. I can't see money being an issue, I can't see his family being an issue given he lives around the corner. The only issue with Wane would be if he would want to come due to his Wigan ties but lets ask the question and find out.

You are dead right that they got sacked but ...
Ellery Hanley was sacked for a breach of contract & Millward for gross misconduct.
I thought it seemed a bit strange.

I know what you mean but he also has a track record of getting the best of his players which is the best attribute a coach can have IMO. For me Powell just doesn't like losing and that's not something I would be upset about in a wire coach because I don't like us losing either, he seems to get frustrated when injuries pile up etc, it could be argued we have a better squad depth than cas, so maybe injuries would be a little less frustrating for him. Maybe he could bring Trueman with him too? I think we missed a trick with Watson to be honest, I think he will go well for Huddersfield and would have loved to see what he could manage with our budget and young players.
Whoever comes in will be looking at a rebuilding job, hill and cooper aren't getting any younger and neither is ratchford, Jason Clark, gaz Widdop and inglis are likely to be off at the end of this season as well, and maybe Blake Austin too? There are some really good building blocks in place though already, daz Clark, King, lineham, Ashton, philbin, currie, mulhern? Butler? Plus I have really high hopes for riley Dean (really like the look of him), Longstaff, doro and josh thewlis. Thewlis could slot straight in to the team now and not look out of place. Whoever comes in is likely to have a large chunk of cap space to play with including marquee spots. I hope the appointment is confirmed early and then the coach and board can get to work on recruitment early.

| Still a no on Powell for me sorry CW8, the over the top protestations when Westwood was genuinely a bit late on Gale a few years ago at their place had my all Keegan-esque in a losing a lot of respect kind of way.
I agree that there may be some merit in an early announcement of Price's replacement as it might ensure that the players definitely know that the guy making next season's plans is watching now
