| Teams are starting to target Joel and penny's winger, every play at Widnes long passes all went down that side, last season gene got criticised for his defence, penny has taken unfair stick, but over last 2 seasons that's where we have been weak!!

| Quote: matthew "Props are not the problem (in my opinion) . Even Asotasi is doing OK. I would start with Hill and Asotasi and bring on Harrison and England. Include Westwood as a middle channel player with a 13 on his back. The halves have nothing to hit out wide. Give them something to pass to. The second rowers are either ponderous (Laithwaite) or ineffective (Currie). Neither can run any sort of angle at pace. If you have essentially defensive second rows - you need to attack with the centres and wings. Today there was one running chance to a winger - not enough and both centres offered little.
So crazy idea - why not play Sims and Philbin in the second row and get them running out wide.
The defensive system is too compressed - and does not work. It seems to be an "up and in" system which needs rapid and agressive defensive from the second rows and centres otherwise there's an overlap and players on the outside get bypassed or marooned. Change the system!
I worry most about the lack of skill in the team. Passes are all over the place. Runs are timed badly. There is not hint of alternative runners and backing up. Players are going backwards skillwise - Who is charge of the skills development for individual players?
I watched the warm up today and it was tepid. Little dibbed kicks , half heartedly caught. Players running through shields then rapidly decelerating and not busting with venom. Pat a cake shield drills. Dropped ball...
You play as you train...
M'"
I should add that many teams play a compressed defence in the opposition half but transition to a sliding defence with greater width as they regress towards their own line but Warrington, for some reason do not. Up and in (or umbrella) and sliding do not mix.

I'd also say he's a bit of a fraud as well.... He actually reminds me of Basil Richards - Remember when we signed him, he was hyped up to the hilt. He was going to be the next Ellery Hanley, he was going to be this, he was going to be that. As it turned out, we may as well have signed Viv Richards. He was absolute garbage.
Currie is similar in that he came onto everybody's radar under a sea of expectation and hype, and similarly he is turning out to be a massive anti-climax.
He may well come good at some point, but at present he is heading for a career of mediocrity in the lower leagues if he doesn't sort himself out soon - He may well have a longish contract with us, but fans aren't stupid and will quickly recognise somebody stealing a living, which is what he looked to be doing yestrday.

Can not argue with that, on a number of occasions he stopped rather than running the ball in.

| I think one of the main problems with our forwards is that instead of working his young forwards in gradually over the last 2/3 seasons TS persevered with the old guard of Morley, Carvell,Wood in the hope of the elusive GF win & then ,for whatever reason, they all moved on. At the same time the academy structure where some of the replacements would hopefully come from was abandoned by the RFL. All that is left then is the under 19s for back up ,many of whom are still wet behind the ears, & the option of buying under performing Aussies.

Smith must sit down and admit this is one of the holes he's dug for himself, it appears at the moment he's still digging.

Whilst I agree with the first part of your post, I think Smith did overdo the 'old guard' in an attempt to pull off the elusive GF win, Philbin has been one of our success stories this year. Maybe the complexion of our pack might be viewed differently if Grix, Evans and Harrison were fully fit and firing, together with Laithwaite and Curry really kicking on?
Seems a fair gamble to me, admittedly one that hasn't paid off due to injuries and a lack of form/confidence, but, a different proposition to the lack of halves accusation for mine.

| I'm going to resurrect this ridiculous thread on my dingdangdongle for backslappers.
We gave it a good dig v Pies but to be honest we never looked like we could win after that first 10 mins without some ref help and luck, but was evident that we could compete, which was pleasing.
Once Big Roy was subbed, our props for much of the game, were owned by the Pies big guys.
Hilly as much as we love him was shut down.
Sims effort and passion is there but he looked the looked all over that extra stone lacking prop we've already identified.
England makes daft errors and is slow.
Big Roy doesn't get enough time on the pitch when he actually does look the best prop we had.
Yes big Roy was our only prop who could match the size and effectiveness of the Pies props.
Thank the Lord, Wakefield had only one fit prop last week.
If we had have had Woody still we may just have matched them. We are desperate for another Morley or a Carvell if we are to make a real challenge this season.

| Is Hill injured or something? I only ask because aside from the dummy and score he was practically anonymous against Saints.

Roy looks good because he averages 20 mins a game 10 mins a half for 160,000 a week, and 5 bed house all in,,
England was our best forward last night, played nearly 50 mins, and hit Crosby hard on more than one occasion, Simms played about 20 mins, didn't reshow, hill has been out of sorts,, our best pair which started most of our 10 game winning run last year was England and hill,,
Big Roy needs to play longer than 15/20 mins a week and we will see how fresh and quick he looks,,
My worry is how tired Ben Harrison looks and we are not halfway through season yet,,
Our defence lost game not forwards, if ratchfordratchford hadn't slipped 2 metres from try line another 6 points, means we would lost by 4, that wing has been our week spot Widnes did us and cas hit us teams will work it out, forwards arnt issue for me,,

| Quote: the flying biscuit "thought Sims was superb, dont think he missed a tackle, made some great tackles where he had no right to still be holding on to the attacker. And would take two hits ups in a set of six.
It Was Hill that came up the shocking miss-tackle in midfield which led to Cas' first try.
But the problem for me is the Second rowers Id' go so far to put it in type that Ben Currie is a coward.......
He puts himself in positions to make it impossible for the halfbacks to pass to him, and if he's in position he looks like he doesnt want it So Obrien takes one for him, then he puts pressure on the kicker without putting any real pressure on the kicker and then puts himself out of the attacking line for two or three tackles ......
he's the worst second rower Ive ever seen........ Laithwaite on the other hand works hard and will trundle it up all day but he has no pace and no idea of running lines hitting gaps and giving his halfbacks a fighting chance....
it was loving desperate today...........'"
anyone who crosses the line to play this great game at whatever level is no coward. All entitled to opinions but a coward he is defiantly not.

Really??????
We are in need of a strong running forward which causes excitement in the crowd every time he takes the ball up, busting tackles & offloading a plenty for Myler et al to feed off

| I did leave the statement open ended about Woody, but he was still on our books this season so that was the point.
But I did harp on about us being a quality prop short. We signed Sims but release Woody, so we're no better off! Still one short.

| Two props down with Ben Evans who is probably the quickest of our props, although Hill is being targeted he is still putting in the effort we were poor against Sts yet he made the sky opta team of the week for most meters.
