| Quote: St pete "IMO i don't really rate him and never have. I never really got what all the fuss was all about.
In myler's defence tho, he is a ball playing scrumhalf and only 19. With eastmond and tomkins they are runners of the ball as well as ball player, so they stand out more as they make more breaks. It's hard for a 19yr old lad to control the game like myler is expected to do.
If myler is as good as smith thinks then i don't think you will see the best of him until he's 21 when he will be more mature. When briers returns will help myler a great deal but don't expect a 19yr old kid to run a a side in super league as it will not happen.
Eastmond is finding it easier as he has super pace off the mark and has good power, he stands out more.'"
It's important that both Eastmond and Tomkins don't just sit back and rely on their pace and elusiveness to out fox the opposition, because as they age and injury's take there toll both will suffer in the speed stakes. It's therefore imperative that both continue to add strings to their bow, I see Tomkins play pretty much every week and you can see the change in him, yes he still attacks the line but his vision and selection of passes is becoming better and better, as is his kicking game.
Tomkins is slowly but surely not becoming the one trick pony that I feel Eastmond could. Granted I don't see the lad an awful lot, but from TV highlights and the games I do see other than Eastmond's remarkable pace and strength coupled with a good kicking game I just don't see the other facets that a great halfbacks needs, whether he'll develop them over time remains to be seen.

Like Tomkins, Eastmond is just learning his trade. He is behind Tomkins in opportunity because Tomkins played many more games than Eastmond last season. However, Eastmond is gradually learning to direct play as well as do all the other things he is so good at. While pace does decrease with age, he's got plenty more years in him to 'out fox' the opposition. I'm sure over the coming seasons he will develop his game accordingly, as will Tomkins.

| for visible improvement in Eastmond's all round game, watch a tape of of the cup semi final -v- Hudds last year where he looked completely lost, then watch his game against Wire on Friday. His all round kicking game, vision and awareness, have improved dramatically, and he is now directing the team like a half back. If he carries on like that, in a couple of years he will be the best no7 in the world.
as for Myler, he looked a bit lost and confused on Friday - but it was probably the biggest game of his career (crowd, expectation in the team, no Briers to play with etc etc) and Saints definately targetted him early on. He will be a very good player for you lot - give him chance! Look at Sculthorpe when he first moved to Saints as a young lad and had the expectation of justifying the big transfer fee instantly. For 2 years he was pretty average, but look where he ended up.

Agree about Eastmond. Thought he played a very good controlled game, excellent kicking.
Myler will be absolutely fine. He needs a good 6 to play alongside him, it's a shame that Clarke is out as well as Briers, as he would help him out.

| Quote: SRLFC JK "Agreed. I watched him at Salford and always said his only real talent is in backing up a break - and yes he is very very good at that. I posted something similar on this site when he left for Wire and was told it was sour grapes.
If you have a top class play maker beside him they he will be the top try scorer, but of you are relying on him to make the play, they you will be disappointed.'"
Quote: SRLFC JK "Didn't set up that many tries last season then?'"
Answer that myself then.
He got 15 try assists last season more then Tomkins and Eastmond now I didn't watch Salford much last season but clearly he must have the talent to send players over the line.

| I know it's a different sport, but it's took Wayne Rooney 5 years at Man Utd to develop into the footballer that he is now. At 24, they're now seeing what a talent he is on a consistant basis, rather than just glimpses.
I guess we can be pretty confident that for the time Smith is at the club, lets say 3 years, he's got one of the best coaches to learn from, so he couldn't have a better chance of blossoming, as the likes of Ronaldo & Rooney have under Ferguson.

| May i ask a question?
You all keep saying he's just a kid and time's on his side and that's fair enough but how much time do you give him?
You Wire fans are an expectant bunch and if this time next year or even the year after his game hasn't developed how long will you prevail with him for?

Well by that time we will probs of bought a number 6 to fit in with the way he plays if he's not setting things up enough.
Lets get one thing straight though the lad hasn't played badly this season.

| Comparing Myler to both Tomkins & Eastmond at this stage is a little unfair.
Both Tomkins and Eastmond have had an apprenticeship in a professional, and, the majority of the time, successful environment where they have been surrounded by top class players, who have been able to take plenty of pressure off their shoulders and where they have been able to develop their talents steadily.
Myler has spent his career so far at a second rate level, where he has been the big fish in a tiny pond....Learning from those who are of a lesser talent is not ideal for a youngster, but that is what Myler has had to endure.
Now at Wire he is having to do the learning that Tomkins & Eastmond have been able to do in previous years....Unfortunately for Myler he has a huge price tag on his head!!....Realistically, I believe it will be at least next season before Myler is anywhere near the other 2's present standard, and a good while before he is at his peak, but I have little doubt from what I see, that Myler will be a pretty decent half back in years to come.

| Myler's made a very good start to his Warrington career, especially considering he's a) 19 and b) played 7 games. We've won 5 of them and he's scored in most. He's been in and out a bit but so have most of our squad if you look at it properly. It's also worth remembering that he's been playing with a makeshift halfback partner for the most part.

| To listen to these bitter Reds, eagerly waiting for Myler to fall flat on his face, you would think that Myler hadn't been playing well. He's been doing fine and will only get better with better players around him.
I would hope that he would be a club man like Briers who we can build a team around for the next decade, but knowing Widnesians, once they get in superleague I expect Richie to some time or other wanting to "go home".

| Quote: SaintsFan "I know I'm butting in as a Saints fan but since you mentioned Kyle ...
Kyle began to shine as a no.7 when Leon began to play. Kyle is a young player who is very much learning his trade. He has a certain flash, a sidestep and a swerve which probably means he is noticed more readily than Myler. He is also pretty versatile. He scored all our points at the GF from the centre spot. He has covered fullback a few times now and is slowly picking up the role. But he is only in the early stages of his no.7 career and without his partner functioning well, he does not make the impact he makes when Leon is on form. But then the halfbacks are partners and so even when both are very experienced, if one is not functioning well, the other will suffer and overall play will not be as good.'"
Excellent post.

This is the opposite of an excellent post.

| This place makes me cringe at times with some of the knee-jerk criticism that goes on. The application of common sense is mostly at a loss on this forum.
