Tomkins would improve vastly under the tenure of a better coach in my opinion.
Wigan aren't exactly impressing too much anywhere on the field, apart from Ainscough.

I've never seen what the big hoo-ha is about Dobson. Good kicker and that is it.

A scrum half is usually the first receiver and is there to give the ball to the forwards.
A stand-off would usually play at second receiver and distribute the ball to the backs.
Both usually have kicking games, but the 7 is usually more of an organiser, and the 6 more of a ball runner.
That's my basic understanding anyway, but I realise there is less distinction between the two roles in the modern game.

| good reply. but all the talk on here of it is like they are 2 specialist positions . its nonsense its just like your two backs in footy or your two centre midfielders in footy. a good player can play both roles 6+7 no danger.

Quote: cheeseywire999 "QUOTA RULES

No more than 5 overseas quota players
No more than 8 "overseas trained" players inc 5 OQs
Rest of squad to be from players trained within same Federation

| If we are to replace Briers it needs to be with a player who can pass to their right. It is easier said than done. If you look at a lot of the other teams in SL the main try scorers are the left wingers. Saints buck that trend because of Gidleys (And Lyon's before him) brilliance, We have also had an advantage in this area because of our right hand side over the last few years.
If your right sided half back cannot pass to their right that well (or not as good as some) then they need to have other tricks up their sleeve, Pace to burn, great footwork, Awesome dummy combined with great hand off etc. Briers does not have some of these but he can pass to the right and can kick.
If you think about it a kid might pick up a ball at the age of 5, by the time he is 15 he might have passed the ball to his left on average 10 times a day for 10 years, that is 36,000 times minimum. It takes a lot of catching up to get that good at passing to the right.
I am sure the club are looking at the 15, 16, 17 year old half backs we have and developing their skills. The holy grail would be to have 2 halfbacks that have the lot. The evasion skills and speed of Burrow, the power of Pryce, the passing ability of Briers (Right) and Cooke (Left) the defence of monaghan and a kicking game. Oh and vision
The only player that gets close to that job spec is Johns.
