thats about right that Rob...
However Shelford was lazy and a touch overweight but an absolute class player..but i think i'd have Mike Greg in at 13.
and I'd have John Bevan in their somewhere probably replacing bateman on the bench...
for those that saw Roberts play just imagine him Running on to some of Langers disguised passes.

| Pre-Super League
Parry Gordon
Brian Bevan
Jonathon Davies
Jim Challinor
John Bevan
Gerry Helme
Alex Murphy
Alan Rathbone
Kevin Ashcroft
Les Boyd
Paul Cullen
Harry Bath
Mike Greg
Notable mentions/places on the bench for:
Andy Greg, Bobby Fulton, Jackie Edwards, Steve Hesford, Des Drummond, Mark Forster, Ken Kelly, Paul Bishop, Kevin Tamati, Alan Bateman, Francis Maloney amongst many others.
Super League Era:
Brent Grose
Henry Fa'afili
Martin Gleeson
Toa Kohe Love
Mark Forster
Lee Briers
Alan Langer
Adrian Morley
Danny Farrar
Danny Nutley
Darren Burns
Ben Westwood
Sid Domic
Bench
Micky Higham
Nick Fozzard
Mark Hilton
Logan Swann
I make no apologies for basing most of my SL era team before Tony Smith's reign. I've gone for a combination of quality and toughness as well as players who have shown a bit of balls and stood up when others didn't want to. Fozzard, Hilton, Domic and Burns will forever have my respect for their performances in 2002.
I am a bit disappointed with myself that I took Lee Penny out at the last minute. He was a great servent to the club and scored over 100 tries in the 10 years or so he was here. But I never saw him score from inside his own in-goal area and I'm sorry, but Grose edges it for that.

I agree about Kelly Shelford, if he had worked on his fitness more he could have been anything he wanted to be in the game. With ball in hand he oozed class, i picked Shelford ahead of Mike Gregory because i think he was more creative with ball in hand. Mike Gregory was the ultimate leader and a total work horse, he lead by example.
Its just that ive always been a fan of the creative type players in the pivots which is why i was a big fan of the likes Hanley, Tony Myler, John Woods, Brad Fittler, Andrew Johns and now Michael Monaghan just to name a few.
Every RL fan will appreciate different styles of teams and players which is why you will always get a different all time greatest teams from fans, you would love to include the likes of Bob Jackson, John Bevan, Mark Forster, Alex Murphy, Tommy Martyn Snr, Jim Challinor, Derek Whitehead, Steve Hesford, Parry Gordon, Bob Eccles and so on but you can`t include them all.
Mark Roberts if it hadn`t of been for injury would have been the modern day Lee Gimore but a lot better, he had more power, was probably quicker and didn`t take a step backwards. He could also defend as well, and yeh it would have been frightening if he had been in the same team as Alfie.

| All good players, Yes some of them great but these are mainly a "Post 70 team" What about some of the other great post war players,
players like
HARRY BATH
GERRY HELME
BEVAN (HOW MANY TRIES? ? AND HOW MANY TIMES 7 IN A MATCH ? ? )
GENTLEMAN JIM CHALLINOR"
ERIC FRODSHAM
MOGGIE PALIN.
PADDY GORDON
STEVE HESFORD
FOR HOOKER (WHEN THEY WERE HOOKERS) PADDY LANNON.
BOBBY WAMBON
MIKE GREGORY (R I P) HAS TO BE UP THERE
AND FOR A SHORT PERIOD AT WILDERSPOOL, THE "LAST WARRINGTON BORN CAPTAIN OF AUSTRALIA" AND LATER TOUR MANAGER TOO.? ? ? A GREAT PLAYER........
and FOR ME, STILL THE GREATEST HALF BACK WHO EVER PUT ON A PAIR OF BOOTS. SIR ALEC MURPHY (HE WAS STILL A GREAT PLAYER WHEN HE CAME TO WARRINGTON).
I'M OFF TO THE DOHA SPORTSMAN'S DINNER AT THE D R F C TONIGHT, WHERE "HAPPINESS IS A COOL VODKA & TONIC".

| Kelly Shelford was a long way short of Mike Gregory, he wasn't even in the same league. Comparing those two is like comparing Owen Craigie to Paul Sculthorpe, Craigie had his fans for his creativeness with ball in hand as well.

In the same league as what ? I referred to Kelly Shelford being more dangerous with ball in hand than Mike Gregory, i also went on to say that i prefer a more attacking style of pivot player along with every fan will have different ideas of their favourite type of player.
Mike Gregory was a great organiser, a motivator and an endless work horse. You must have been watching a different game back then if you thought Mike Gregory was a more creative player than Shelford was.
Ok ive bitten, thats one in your net

| I think there are some certs if you go for post 1970.... John Bevan (how people can pick Dessie above John Bevan I don't know), Boyd and Morley, Jiffy, Mike Greg, Bob Jackson, then you get to opinion - Parry Gordon or Alfie? Woods or Briers? Tamati or Ashcroft or Monaghan? Hesford or Whitehead? Too difficult to do!
