50086_1357229109.jpg [b:33tg3xj5]Me:[/b:33tg3xj5] I'm still reeling from the news that someone is considering watching the 1st and 3rd game on Saturday and NOT watching Warrington play. It's like being in Shea Stadium when the Beatles came to town and deciding to nip out for a fag.
[b:33tg3xj5]knockersbumpMKII:[/b:33tg3xj5] Is it FOOK, you're good but you're not THAT good, jesus you wanky fans need to get over yourselves, Beatles at the Shea in '65 was a once in a lifetime opportunity for some (despite the following years performance), you can watch a very good team in primrose & yellow play every week if you really wanted to but comparing it to one of the very best music groups of all time in an iconic stadia such as the shea is overegging your importance, you're not even the best team in SL atm:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_50086.jpg |

| The argument that 'if an Australian coach was any good, he would be coaching in the NRL' is a little bit odd. I have no idea if Tony Smith has ever been approached to coach in the NRL again (he has done it as an assistant of course) but I'd be surprised if he hasn't. Anyway, his track record in England is outstanding, that isn't diminished by the lack of an Australian experience to compare it to.
Anyway, as Warrington play in England, I couldn't give a tiny rats ass whether or not Tony Smith would be a success in the NRL or not. It's an irrelevance. As for how long he will stay at Warrington, I'd imagine he'll see out his contract and then leave - he would have put in about 5 or 6 years at that point which is a long stint. When he goes, the world won't stop turning.
His legacy will be the trophies (plural, even now it feels weird) but also the culture that he has helped to develop. Building a culture is something he is interested in, he said so himself on Radio Manchester t'other week, and that is what persists. Whilst we're handing out badges, we should also remember that it's not just the coach that builds success, it's the staff and players as well. Dare I say it, even supporters have a part to play.

| The most pertinent point of course is this: Tony Smith has no desire to return to Aus and has made that very clear. He owns a farm near Huddersfield and has even become a British citizen. England is now his home and he has said he is very settled here.

| This thread is just a typical argument my Dad's better than your Dad.
If your Dad was as good as you think why's he with your Mum? If he was that special he'd be on a yacht in the Maldives drinking champagne whilst being attended to by a supermodel. But no he's just with yer Ma. Anybody could get with her.

It is and it isn't. The default response to a player being lauded is; can they do it in the NRL? I see no reason as to why the same doesn't apply to coaches. The rights and wrongs of such a standoint can be debated untile the end of the world.

no he's not, he holds a brittish passport, lives here and does not plan to return to australia, i think that solves the stupid question originally asked about why he does not coach in the NRL!

But I don't understand the logic, if you've been given a job in the NRL does that make you better?
Rank these coaches in order: Shaun McRae, Royce Simmons, Tony Smith, Michael McGuire.
McRae and Simmons must be the top two because they've had NRL head coaching jobs and Smith and McGuire haven't.
Whos a better player Ben Westwood or David Kidwell?
Kidwell because he's done it in the NRL if Westwood was any good he would have been there.
Whos better, Wigan fans, Denis Moran or Sam Tomkins?
Must be Moran because he played many games in the NRL you don't see Tomkins in the NRL now do you...?
As for Brian Bevan, he never got beyond reserve grade at the Roosters? Why did we build a statue of him, we didn't build a statue of Leon Felton?

Going to the NRL is no sign of achievement in itself (see Thorman, C. and Sibbit, I. for reference). Going to the NRL and embedding yourself and maintaining standards (as well as contract) is my idea as being top of the tree.

Would you say then that Brett Finch, who played 250 odd NRL games at top clubs, and won a Grand Final, has proven himself to be better than Lee Briers?

obviously you're a well respected poster.... and quite rightly... but i don't see where this argument is heading after that riposte.

You forgot to mention Finch's match winning Origin appearance.
Skills wise; Briers for me. Consistency; Finch.
