| He would go with well wishes, should he continue as we are currently progressing. Results this year have been up and down but I still have this feeling that if we can get close to our best team out on the field we can compete with the best. I’ll forever be grateful for turning this club around, or contributing towards it, after Powell’s hatchet job.

I'm pretty disappointed to read that Sam is openly talking about his next job. This sends a poor message about commitment and intent, the timing sucks too. Warrington are not going to turn anything around by the end of 2026 (if we ever are) so this feels like passing time to suit him rather than getting stuck into to a proper turn around job. Just 15 months into the job with us and he is already talking about his next one. That's pretty telling. *If* Sam Burgess gets the Perth job it will not be based on any coaching credentials or coaching achievements - he has achieved absolutely nothing and will likely have Warrington (a full cap triple marquee side) at 9th in the league on Sunday evening.

| Sounds like it is more than a rumour now:- Article copied from Warrington Guardian:- SAM Burgess has officially declared his interest in coaching the next expansion team to enter the NRL competition. Indeed, he has confirmed initial talks have been held about him spearheading the Perth-based franchise when they enter the league in 2027. Reports from Australia had earmarked Burgess as a front-runner for the role, which current Leeds Rhinos boss Brad Arthur had previously been heavily linked with. The team, which will either be known as the Perth Bears or the Western Bears, will be the next expansion team to come into the NRL, with a Papua New Guinea-based franchise to follow in 2028. The timings would appear to marry up, with Burgess’ contract with The Wire expiring at the end of the 2026 season. And while he insists he is fully focused on the job he has to do at The Halliwell Jones Stadium and that nothing has been agreed, he admitted the prospect of coaching the new side is one that appeals to him. “It’s a great opportunity and a job I’ve certainly spoken about. I’d be interested in it for sure,” the Wire boss exclusively told the Warrington Guardian. “I’ve got a job to do here, but there will always be things happening in the background and I’m pretty open with the club about everything. “Nothing is signed or agreed just yet, and I’ll be the first to let the club know of anything if I need to. “It is something I’d be really interested in and I feel I could make a total difference there, but for now I’m totally focused on Warrington.” Taking the Perth job would mark a return to the NRL for Burgess for the first time since the end of 2023, when he left his role as assistant coach at South Sydney Rabbitohs – the club with whom he spent the majority of his glittering playing career over two spells – in order to take up his first senior head coaching role with The Wire.

| Conversely, Sam was open and honest at the point of signing the extension last year and had continued to be open and honest, which can shape our long term planning. We should have an idea already who’s next in for 2027 and actually have an idea of what recruitment will look like for that. It’s excellent succession planning, and we have a ticking clock on this group, and Sam, to deliver something.

If he gets this job, I have concerns that he could cherry pick some of our players, including starlets like Lindop and Taylor-Wray. I am aware that they are signed-up with Wire contractually, but the contracts don`t seem to work in the clubs` favour when a player is determined to leave.

Yeah I'm sure the CEO and DOR are all over it .... let's hope the group who select coaches are not the same who select new players. I don't believe we had succession planning for Powell despite the writing being on the wall for weeks that he was done for. Panic coach recruitment phase with the will she/ wont she relocate to the UK farce, then the wild card Sam Burgess.

Both Sam and Brad Arthur openly talking about their next job in 18 months time is unedifying in my view. Disrespectful to the clubs. Sure, have the conversations - but why in public? Maybe their agents are ensuring their names are in the fray, keeping them in the picture and relevant. Sam speaking out after Brad getting his elbows out first earlier in the week. It's no coincidence. We don't have players talking like this. Imagine Danny Walker saying "well I've got a job to do at Warrington, but then in 2027 I hope to be going on to bigger and better things at Wigan". It would be unacceptable. Sam won't be getting the coaching role at Perth based on coaching credentials or achievements so no pressure on him to deliver anything with us - which is fortunate for him. His well backed club with 3 marquee players is going to be 9th in the league and way, way off the pace. Sure we will stick with Sam - but the timing is all to suit him, not our club. He will be signing players that another coach will have to work with when he's gone. What if we continue our nose dive? the club will think, well he's going end of 2026 anyway and another 3 year plan to kick off in 2027. Also releasing this PR on the eve of the Magic Weekend with a busted up squad about to be annihilated by Wigan. No, I'm annoyed by this.

The difference is that Burgess has a personal relationship with our players and would have one and a half seasons of daily contact to persuade them to move to the NRL with him.

Fair point, but I would counter that those minded to go to the NRL with Sam, would likely be tempted to go to the NRL anyway if the opportunity arose. But yes I agree this can only increase, not decrease, the risk. Let's just make sure our contracted players have rather large transfer fees attached.

No, I'm annoyed by this. i suppose the big difference is Brad Arthur only extended for 1 season after only initially committing to part of last season, and has made no secret of his intention to go back to Oz with Sam, i dont think there is any secret he plans to go back to Oz, but equally i agree talking whilst under contract isnt an ideal situation on the flip side, and there was a thread on here a couple of weeks ago about him, is he actually achieving as a coach? Whilst there is no doubt he was an incredible player, and has an aura about him. As a coach, there is only so far that the aura will get you. If you dont / cant manage players or have the tactical nous, then he may not succeed here or in Oz, and at the minute does his time here merit a head coach role in Oz, i from an outsiders perspective would say no, but you guys are better placed to comment
