|
It's all very well for other teams to be feeding off the Salford position but it will leave Salford in a worse situation than they are already in terms of playing strength & probably not deserving a place in SL.[/quote:2z9ro0dn]
The thing is, though, that it's the RFL that has ordered Salford to sell players in order to comply with their new reduced cap of £1.2m. That needs to happen ASAP, so the other clubs would actually be doing Salford a favour (of sorts) by buying their players, and thus helping to get them within their new cap. Salford being left in a worse situation in terms of their playing strength is an inevitability (unless the RFL change their minds, and I rule out nothing with those clowns). As for whether or not Salford deserve to be in this season's Super League, that's a moot point. Perhaps future IMG grading questionnaires need to be more explicit, and contain a question along the lines of 'Are you at risk of imminent financial collapse?'.

| Salford have been on a tightrope for a good few years financially & it isn't a good advert for the game at the start of the season. Even the new ground hasn't really helped them.

The new ground has been the catalyst of Salford woes.
Built away from their fan base on wasteland and owned by Peel Holdings and Salford Council with no way of generating any income for the Rugby League Club.

| On another note, good to see Connor Wrench training, Looks to have put a little bit of size on as well. I hope he has an injury free year this year, he's in his last year with us, and regardless of his potential, if he gets another injury that takes him out of action for a long time we might release him.

According to Davidson he’s injured.

As much as i do believe he would improve us, i expect this to be nothing more than his agent just using our name to increase Sneyds value as many agents do this as we are known to be a spender. In some ways i hope I'm wrong as i often am

Really hope he can play a few games without getting another injury. There comes a time when everyone gets fed up of recovering from injury & throws in the towel. He has had such a tough time. Even when he gets back on the field he'll be apprehensive. Best of luck to the lad.

| I'm glad someone mentioned Wrench; I'm also rooting for him.
He is exactly the sort of centre people say they want to see - mesmerising footwork, puts his winger away - but they bottle it if that player misses a tackle or two.

He has great pace, evasive ability and footwork, and can make space for his winger but as you say his defence lets him down. Presumably why he was dropped by Burgess after round 8 (or was that another injury?).
He is into his 6th season following debut and has played 38 games. This year is a big one for him to cement a place and a new contract.

In Wrench and Lindop, we have two centres with vast potential. Here's hoping that they can both stay fit and keep progressing, because if they fulfil that potential they could form an outstanding centre partnership for years to come.
Derek Beaumont now saying that Leigh are no longer in for Sneyd. Perhaps gives the 'Sneyd to Wire' rumour more credence?...
https://www.loverugbyleague.com/post/ma ... -half-back[/quote:21uhbyul]
The issue with signing Sneyd is that we will have three specialist scrum halves, who have no versatility. If Sneyd came cheap this wouldn't be an issue, but I imagine he'll take up a bit of valuable cap space. I think he'd be a solid addition, and would even go as far as saying I'd have taken Sneyd over Leyland (at the time we signed him) for a year or two while we bring Hayes through. However, we've made our signings, and I was actually quite impressed with Leyland on debut.

| We're not in for Sneyd, i can't see that what so ever. We've got Hayes and Leyland with Ratchford as back up. Sneyd isn't needed.
Talking of Ratchford, has anyone heard how he's doing after his head knock on Friday?

Ratchford looks fine in recent training photos released by the club. Good to see.

I seem to remember Briers saying (admittedly when Wrench was younger and before injuries) that Wrench was faster than Ashton over 100m from a standing start? Whereas Ashton is faster hitting the ball running, or something to that effect? Or maybe it was the other way round.
I'd have to try and google it. Think it was in the guardian a few years back.

Dufty and Wrench would beat Ashton over 50m from a standing start. They both have amazing acceleration. Ashton is no slouch to begin with but he's only really super rapid once he's at full speed because he's more of a rangy runner with a longer stride. We played Wigan away about 3 years ago and Ashton got an intercept. Before he'd got into full flight Jai Field had turned round from running forward and caught him because of how quick he is off the mark.

No way will he be offered anywhere near his current exorbitant wage on his existing contract at Wire.
A lot will depend on whether Wrench can stay fit, has improved his defence and forces his way into the starting 13.
With Lindop on the horizon too, it maybe King will not be offered a deal that he finds acceptable and moves elsewhere?

I don't think he is getting anywhere near that anywhere else. He will also have to accept a club lower down the food chain. Maybe his home town Huddersfield?
Warrington can really improve on the starting left and right centre positions occupied by King and Tai, either from within as you suggest, or by recruitment.

Neither King or Tai offer that much to the Wire attack as individuals but are good defensively and make good yards in the early tackle count.
It`s a shame that we missed-out on getting Wardle from Huddersfield as there was a player exchange deal that should have been sewn up with King moving there. The players that Wigan sent there in the Wardle deal were both inferior to King. .

If Tai, Musgrove and Vaughan go, which I think is quite likely, we’ll have at least 3 quota places available. I wonder if we’ve already got things lined up

I wouldn't be surprised if we went back in for King if he ended up being available. I get the feeling Keighran will head home and Eckersley may well be given the shirt but Eckersley can also cover wing and fullback and whereas now they have Miski, Keighran and Eckersley fighting for 2 spots on the right hand side, they'd then have Miski, Eckersley and King. All just a guess but he was very popular in his time at Wigan by all accounts and did a great job for us.

it's true what you say, but I feel we need more if we are to win a Grand Final which will involve us finishing #1 or #2 after the regular season. The attacks that involved Tai getting his hands on the ball typically ended with him running diagonally to the touchline, hitting the brakes and being tackled as he cut back in. King, whilst not a natural wingers centre, has a bit more of an idea but lacks pace. We also stopped the high kicks to him for some reason.
Perhaps you can have one yardage/defensive centre like that in a side, but not two. Our best side in decades (2011) had Matt King and Bridge as centres. Both potent attacking players.
I'm not sure Wardle was ever a long term opportunity for us, superb centre as he is - he does it all.
