I think that Winged Eel Fingerling was the better of Beefheart's guitarists, but The Captain and crew are all way too avant-guarde to be considered for a supergroup.

You can argue about guitarists and drummers until you're blue in the face, but there is absolutely no doubt about who is the greatest bass player in the entire history of rock music - Jack Bruce.
