| Quote: Wire Weaver "I used to purposely watch Penny, when he was being criticised for his defense, and on the majority of occassions, he was left in a two on one situation by his centre, which innevitabley lead to a try.
He was one, if not the, fastest players I have ever seen in a Warrington shirt. I would love to see him back, if he has kept that pace.
We really do need someone with a real turn of speed.'"
very fair comment.
i always say, a winger is only as good as his final pass!
Jim challenor was noted for saying that Brian Bevan's tries were down to him giving Bev the ball with half a yard.
If Penny had have been given the ball with half a yard, he would have scored every time.
I say he was unfortunate to be paired with another winger that we played out of position as a centre, Matt King.

| This rumour is gathering pace.
Personally, I liked watching Penny, and I agree to a point that some of the defensive frailties were not his fault, but of the inside men, remember at the time we had a half back who was actually a hooker defending on that side.
His speed and finishing ability is undoubted, and it would be great to see him get a few more on the board like those against Saints all them years ago!
Re Smith, we don't know what the conversation was when Penny left. He may have set this up, go away, grow up as a player and a person and we'll keep an eye on your progress. Who knows?

| I would think Simon Moran has had some input into the re-signing.
Penny was well liked, a very nice lad and he loved playing at Warrington.

| He's still a defensive liability, based on watching Swinton v York some weeks ago on telly.
No thanks.

| For those citing King as Penny's undoing; it wasn't King alone, it was a left side problem, which was instigated by Anderson's lack of discipline in defence. Fantastically aggressive defender, but if he missed an instant overlap would be created putting the outside men at an instant disadvantage.
The bloke on the end always gets hung out to dry. The above, alongside a sizeable contract for a still raw player, was enough to see Penny ushered out.

if you get the attack right, you seldom need defence!

yes he was unfortunately a lot of people on here didnt understand the basic errors top quality players like King and Anderson were making ...
I just found this old photo I used to try and explain back in the day.....already it appears the defensive liability quotes are out in force and he hasnt even signed.....

Completely agree! Add in the 'static' defender of Monaghan, who is a "middle unit" player, and the issue was complete.

| I for one would welcome him back as thought we let him go far too quickly. No player since, with the possible exception of Chris Hill, has got me off my seat like KP & I still think he has all the attributes to be a SL player - only time will tell if he will be a excellent one.
If its true I say Welcome back Kev & lets get behind the lad!!!

that's the complete opposite of Tony smith's theology.

| from that picture Penny is at fault as all defensive systems work form in to out, meaning the players should come in so they are a solid defensive line without holes, and if the ball is shipped out the defensive line stays together and pulls out. As the picture shows KP stayed on his wing and left a gaping hole inside (closer to the sticks for the converstion)
Seems a bit strange to leave the hole on the outside but there is a greater chance of a dropped ball or mistake if it goes through more hands to get to the whole.
Hope this makes sense.

| it does make sense but it was shown at the start of that year and the end of teh one previously there were many many occasions where penny was on his own YELLING and gesticulating for people to come across and he was completely ignored.
