As a boy I used to wait for the great man at the back of the main stand at Wilderspool every home game to ask him to sign my programme. Over time he came to recognise me and I didn't have to ask. He was my hero truly an all time great. To look at him in his civvies, long gaberdine raincoat, his boots in a neat paper parcel under his arm you'd never guess he was a RL all time great His World try scoring record probably won't ever be broken. I fell in love with the game and was a season ticket holder for many years. BUT around five years ago I walked out of the HJ and haven't been back since. The[i game was overcoached, formulated and any flair and spontoneity was long gone.[/i I could close my eyes for a couple of minutes open them again and I knew where the ball was within about 10 yards. I still follow the game via TV but rarely last more than 20 minutes. I've better things to do like picking the fluff from my deeply sunken navel'"
Hard to find an argument with any of the highlighted bit.
We seem to be obsessed with stats, body shape and copying the Australians. Even Saints (seen as the benchmark for entertainment, for the last 20odd years), have morphed into [irugby by numbers[/i

| Quote: 49er "Not sure I can go along with Lee Briers being rated as a top coach all of a sudden. He had plenty of time here to demonstrate his coaching credentials but, as admittedly an outsider, they are quite difficult to identify.
He always seemed to be subservient to Price whenever I saw him and he has worked with the Academy with limited success.
At Wigan, both he and Peet have benifited with Bevan French and Jai Field both being on fire at the same time with little need for coaching ability.
Then again my view might have been clouded by seeing him beat the Wigan drum and admit he has always been a Saints supporter.'"
I can, standards are set by the club and culture. He may have benefitted a lot from wame giving him tips on how to translate ideas to players and implement into training ? Be given more scope to influence the attack by bringing his own ideas to the table ? Because you don't go from leaving one club who have questioned his input for some time to Wigan who were as dangerous with the ball as Hawkins with an Uzi lady year to what we've seen this year. And no I don't put it down to French and field, Smith looks a different player their whole attack has improved? The only new thing is lee briers.
I questioned how their attack had improved so much at the start of the year and how we questioned his input at Warrington as our attack has been so impotent for so long. Either way our inability to tap into what Wigan have is something that needs looking into. Was he restricted to putting out cones and supervising drills was he just ineffective or were the players just unwilling to learn or not good enough to implement what he was trying to teach them ?

I had the impression he felt let down by the club when he left, as much by the way it was done. Not sure how he would view the prospect of a return. He’s a Sintellins lad at heart, wouldn’t be surprised to see him there at some point.

And Matt Peets in head coach role.
But you are right to challenge whether this up turn in Wigan's fortune is due to Briers and whether we got the best from him.
Personally I think he was slap bang in his comfort zone at Warrington, 20+ years is a long time in one organisation and he was probably stale and needed a challenge.

But peet has been at Wigan for a while and has been their defence coach, wame is a more defensive minded coach too.
I agree that he has not lived up to our expectations given how he was as a player. I think that no consequences for failure is a big issue at Warrington. Both on and off the pitch

This place is something special and I’ll hold this dear to my heart.”
Sounds like we were just an employer, no special memories.....'"
Not even close Shiny pal.
You don’t think the Briers to Brisbane move is due to Wigan do you?
It’s got SJM written all over it…and even has Wire rent money of his home helping him along.
A lad who gives near 25 years to one club, will have friendships and respect that go way-way beyond a move to Wigan made it look.
This Brisbane move has been put in place to get Lee more feathers in his cap. Where better to learn how to be a coach than in Aus?
So many of those ex Aussie assistants that come to the SL, do so only to add the thing that is missing from their CV.
Lee will learn what the likes of Madge McGuire and recent Saints coaches have done as assistants…(that went pear shaped for Price).
They headed to SL so then can get return with a head coach gig in the NRL.
Lee will return from Aus ready to be a head coach…and you can bet, top of his list will be to coach Wire one day.
SJM will have in his mind to get Lee back at Warrington when his 100% ready.
SJM will make sure they’d be no tarnishing to a club legend as Lee, unlike at our WA noisy neighbours. Sacking Cunningham was a huge own goal, how uncomfortable it must be to see a statue of a guy that give so much of his life to one club, to be embarrassingly dumped?

I always love reading your posts.
I love the nostalgia.
I’m saddened to know you don’t watch Wire anymore.
Your view is very similar view to radio presenter Wire, Alan Beswick.
He stopped watching Wire under Price too, highlighting something along the lines of the grace of the ball doing the work by players of craft as opposed to the robotic structures of modern RL. He no longer says he’s a Warrington fan like he used to on almost every show.
I hope the appointment of DP will rejuvenate your hunger to watch Wire once more under better circumstances in 2023, with his, and the clubs effort, to bring football back to the HJ again.

| I am now officially an old fart, I have a mobility scooter. My legs are strong enough but due to a labyrinthectomy my balance has deteriorated. I can still take steps UP two at a time but coming down I become "frozen" if there is no handrail. Next season looks promising with a practically new team and if the coach can get them playing Castleford type football I may start watching again. I haven't made enquiries about letting me in with my scooter(it's a big one) but in these non-discriminatory days I hope there isn't a problem. Seeing as you enjoy my anecdotes here's another. In my working life I was a truck driver and was sent to Greenalls Brewery to pick up a pallet of beer. Having never been in there before I was at a loss as to where to go and I must have been looking puzzled. A large chap in a white coat jumped from the loading bay and asked me where I was going. He put his arm round my shoulder and showed me where to go.It was none other than the late Laurie Gilfedder. I told him I thought he was brilliant in his Wilderspool days, the highlight being at Wembley in the Cup Final vsHunslet when he scored a brilliant individual try bursting through from halfway to score in the corner. I even told him that I forgave him for signing for Wigan. I must have sounded to him like a 12 yearold girl talking to Gary Barlow
