| Quote: Wires71 "But... there is no reason we cannot compete at the very top of SL given our fundamentals now. We are a wealthy club with a large following, excellent facilities, modern stadium in a large town. Why on earth can we not compete with St Helens? To suggest "it was ever thus" is defeatist in my view and lacks ambition.'"
Indeed, the game moves on.
If teams stayed dominant forever, then Batley, Dewsbury and Swinton would still be the top teams in Rugby League.

| The break now should help them get across what they want by the Leeds game, and they should get no time off and start to train how to become a team again.

38352_1407962301.jpg Packs Win Games
Great Packs Make All Backs Look Class

| Quote: sally cinnamon "Back in the day we used to have good backs-against-the-wall performances when a caretaker coach came in.
Remember when Dorahy left, and we put Alex Murphy and Paul Cullen in charge for a game at Wilderspool against Wigan, and Nigel Vagana blitzed them with a hat-trick. One of my favourite Wire games of the 1990s. I remember the build up and hype about that game being unusually high and I had a feeling all week that we would win.
The one I didn't expect to win was after DVDV left and then Neil Kelly who was supposed to be taking over, changed his mind and re-signed with Widnes. Paul Darbyshire took charge against Bradford who were at their most dominant and we beat them in a night game on Sky with Rob Smyth running the winning try into the corner near the end.'"
That being the game that was due to be shown by BSKYB, they pulled out 24 hrs before expected a landslide result.
The game they switched to was a landslide result. Ours s classic.

That wasn't the one.
The Vagana game was 1997
The one Sky welched on, was 4 years later. But you were right about one thing. IT WAS A CLASSIC. A Briers/Langer masterclass

| Unsure Karetaker, but I think the DOR role is something that was really needed.
KP - spread too thinly - can focus on more of the non-rugby element, with the DOR reporting to him.
Whether Chambers is the right man or not, I don't know but he comes across as an honest and decent guy - just like when he was playing, but Id like to see the job spec for the role and how he measured up, and who else was considered.

| I'm sure I read marshall will stay on as first team coach. I think that's great support, even better if Long comes in as well. Lots of coaching experience there to help Sam out.
I'm quite excited about this to be honest.

Indeed. It is very fortunate that the best person in all the RL world for the DoR role was already in the club. Anyway good luck to him.

| I hope when Mike Cooper is finished with Wigan we can bring him in to the back room staff. Make him "head of performance" or something. Maybe Wigan could let him have some time off training to start learning the job now.

To be fair recognising that you have a problem is often cited as the first step on the road to recovery. I too wish Chambers all the best in his new role, at least the Club's hierarchy have concluded that all was not well with the structure of the Club and addressed it.
It pains me to use this particular football analogy, but City worked towards where they are now under Guardiola by putting their house in order first. The difference of course being that they seemed to have targeted their man and put all the 'back of house' pieces in place with Director of Football Scouting and Recruitment roles on the basis of 'what would Pep want?'
They didn't use their new found wealth to put in place what Pearce, Hughes or Mancini wanted, theirs was a bigger vision. However, I hope like them that we agree a plan and make sustainable progress and stop jumping from the frying pan into the fire every couple of years exciting though that can be.

I hope it's a true board level position with empowerment and not just a convenient deflection shield for the board and CEO.

i hope so too, as it's the only way to test the strategy, Chambers himself and legitimise the role.
