| Quote: Or thane "Really weak bench today, i don't understand philbin as a starting 13 i think he's wasted. He should come off the bench to inject the speed and energy we need. Widdop played better then i've seen before and if he had people backing him up on his runs he could put some people through some gaps.
I don't like Ratchford at centre and should stay at fullback, but until Inglis is ready i'd put him at right centre and Ashton at fullback.
Mulhern was steady and a good interchange for Hill.
For me the bench should be Walker or Clark which ever price decides to start, Mulhern, Mamo and Butler or Robson.
There were some really good attacking and set plays from us which i haven't seen for a long time. But we are already very left side dependant. Austin is trying but just can't seem to fire well, Hughes is dependable and defensively good but his attack is STILL none existant. Wrench was ok and overhyped Charnley had a poor game. But it's only the first game so i'm not going in to overreaction panic mode yet. If by the 3rd - 4th game we haven't improved then i'll join the price out campaign ha ha ha'"
When were there some good attacking set plays cos I didn't see em unless a kick to the sky's is a good set play we are poor just like last year

| Some disturbing signs in the game today.
I noticed and the commentators picked up on Ratchford turning up on the right edge as an extra pivot but tipped the ball on about 5 yards before the defensive line. I found that very odd. I could have defended that play. Compare that to Trueman who plays very close to the defence to draw defenders.
Perhaps the most worrying was the kick pressure applied for the Cas drop goal (or lack of it). I was astounded that nobody really broke into a sprint to chase down Mcshane.
It felt like that every player was expecting somebody else to put pressure on the kicker. The reason that rings alarm bells is that it reminded me a lot of the later Tony Smith era when sometes the hooker would get caught in possession and play the ball with nobody there because all the players thought that somebody else would do the job of going to dummy half.
Once you see those signs in a team the writing is on the wall.
It is not the odd fumble or brain fart that worries me it is the lack of responsibility. There were some very experienced players in the fram when the replay showed the defenders who should have been pressurising McShane.

The clichés are the disappointing on-field performances, the coaches who claim brighter things are just around the corner, and the fans who believe them.

| I’m thinking 10 games, lose 5 or more he should be gone.
Yesterday’s performance and result didn’t surprise me one bit, pretty much what we’ve seen for the last 2 years. We will probably labour to win against Leigh on Friday though.

| Sadly, I think we're kidding ourselves if we think Price is going to get the bullet - unless we really are in the sh*t after a couple of months the club has neither the nous, bottle or initiative to have a plan in place.
Price has actually played a blinder here. By making his announcement so soon to the start of the season he removed any chance the club had to force an early exit, not that they are likely to have done, and anyone outside of the club coming in mid-season is left with the debris of his close season work and at a disadvantage.
Those who saw Leigh v Wigan won't be at all surprised if we get a caning; they have something in spades we totally lack - enthusiasm.

| I think they'll be a 'mutual consent' in probably May or something.
It seems the fans want him gone and it looks as though the players do too.
The writings on the wall for an early exit.

| Last year when we fell apart in an a heap there we're basic coaching errors that added to our problems. These were namely, no props on the bench bringing no impact, Poor use of subs and an impotent attack.
Fast forward and we play with one prop on the bench, the one player we have that brings impact is played at 13. 3 subs used for 10 minute spells and one brought on once the white flag went up.
The three shining lights from last season in D Clarke, Mamo & Ashton don't make the 13. Wrench and an out of sorts Charnley meant Cas scored on the same blade of grass every time. The wrench experiment has failed.
A lightweight pack meant our halves spend as much time defending as they did creating.
All due to poor coaching and team selecting. Bin Price of now and don;t settle for a lousy 12 months just because he's handed his notice in.

| said it when he declared he was leaving... he should have gone straight away.
There is absolutely NO benefit, for anyone, to have him hanging around and 'coaching' these players now.

| Don't mind losing if the opposition play well but Wire made Trueman look like Thurston and Turner like Addo-Carr! I was feeling slightly optimistic about the new season as I thought surely the underperforming players from last year couldn't be as bad this.....how wrong was I? The lack of application is unacceptable! We're paying a fortune for Marquee players and getting nothing in return. Senior so-called stars look like they can't be bothered. Leigh were unlucky to lose to the Pies so we'll get battered if we turn up like that again!

| I am not convinced Price is totally to blame. KFP would certainly have played a prominent role in recruitment, and yet we have lacked two decent bench props for a long time.
And given a free hand I could never see Price putting Wrench in the team instead of Mamo. He is a conservative animal and putting a very inexperienced academy player in the team for the first game of the season would have been a bridge too far. I suspect the hand of KFP again.
Having said all that his teams have continually looked flat and lacking in ideas. He doesn't seem capable of motivating them or instilling basic rugby moves. The line is flat with the ball passed along like pass the parcel. Nobody runs onto the ball at speed. We don't dominate the tackle, and invariably end up on our backs when we run the ball in. We are clueless near the try line. There are no dummy runners or movement near the ball carrier. That is all basic coaching stuff, rl isn't exactly a game of chess. Last season we saw Watson work miracles with a patched up team of journeymen and rejects. Powell has always got the maximum out of his limited resources, accepting that his best players will get poached at the end of the season. But we are at the opposite end of that spectrum. The club has fantastic facilities and regularly buys in quality players ( well ok, they buy in players I perhaps should say), yet you feel all that has been squandered.
Yesterday was a truly shocking performance.

Yes I noticed that on a number of occasions.
The attacker with the ball should be going right to the line to commit the defence - imho.
Trueman had a great game - short kicking was superb.

Price re-signed Sita, signed Clark, Latu, Davis, Kibula, Butler and Mulhearn, re-negotiated Robson to stay. He also signed and relased BMM. There can be no excuse about having available props. If they’re rubbish, don’t sign them. If he’s not getting the players he wants, explain that and walk.
Realistically, the job of the coach is to get the best out of the squad he has available. We know the problem with props, so why not split Cooper and Hill up and supplement them with the next best. Then any momentum doesn’t stop completely when we rotate.
Once the players are on the pitch, the coach says who’s on and who’s off. And having a cameo from Walker is refreshing for the sake of Clark’s longevity, it won’t be our problem next year unless we compete for titles. Clark won’t sit around and knock back offers to stay at an average club. And having Ashton on the bench does nothing at all if you’re giving him 9 minutes when the game has gone.
Turner/Shenton defending on the wing, to any decent coach, screams to kick in behind them, make them turn and collect. Neither are experienced wingers. Yet I can’t recall them being out under any stress at all. At least if you stick Ashton on a wing they would have to factor in his pace. Just the threat of a kick in behind makes them think. Sadly, Charnley doesn’t have that strike pace. And he didn’t do the things he usually does so well yesterday, which is defend and return the ball well.
Missed opportunity. The question is how many missed opportunities will the club allow
