St Helens are hopeful that the first match at their new Langtree Park stadium will go ahead as planned despite storm damage.

A triangular section of roofing was dislodged as gales and driving rain swept through the area on Tuesday.

Saints, who played at Widnes's Halton Stadium in 2011 after leaving Knowsley Road, are scheduled to open their new home against Widnes on 20 January.

A club statement said events leading up to the game would continue as planned.

It said: "Contractors accessed the site as soon as weather conditions allowed and they have now taken steps to make the roof safe.

"Work will continue to repair the roof to the highest standard and the programme of events in the run-up to the first match on 20 January against Widnes will continue as planned."


According to Wire FM this morning Saints have said the game v Widnes IS going ahead.....................................lets see what mother nature has to say about that!

Well, the winds were stronger last night than the previous day and there is no further damage to the roof this morning.

But from a different direction.

So?

The damage was done to the South West corner of the stadium and guess where the wind was coming from that night/morning.

Last nights wind came from the West / North West.

From reading the various threads on different sites it appears that the South West corner of the stadium is the most "open" to the elements and someone has suggested that having Teso in it's situation could provide a "wind tunnel" effect.

As it's the second time that this has happened when the wind has blown from the South West it's not unreasonable to think there could be a major problem. I guess we won't know until the engineers have done a full structural report and see what happens when there is a North East gale.

I don't think they could afford the gas masks to enter the area...

Serious note, I don't think you have to look much further than the builders really. Barr built both stadiums. Seeing the standard of work behind the scenes at the HJ, I can hardly say I'm surprised.

Lets just hope there were no pedestrains or vehicles driving in that area at the time, because it could have been nasty

Barr were the contrator and would have sub-contracted the roofing job... however it could have been weakened by the removal of small sections of cladding at the sides of that stand by the current contractors/sub-contractors working on your corners
