| It's impossible to compare Bevan and Hicks they played at very different times. Tries were much harder to come by for Bevan and I believe Bevan should be immortalised as the greatest winger ever to play our game. No one comes close to Brian Bevan for me, but Hicks is the best winger we have had for quite a while and is a reliable finisher in nearly ever game he plays.

| Quote: tino "or alternatively we view a quality athelete through the "he must be inferior to any player from a previous era" glasses and dismiss him outright as belonging on our roll call of great players
but i must admit it would be nice to have someone as entertaining and charismatic as dessie in the side
hicks is solid and rarely makes mistakes, which i reckon is probably one of the most valuable assets for a winger in today's game, and is a brilliant finisher close to the line to boot and so for the super league era he's absolutely head and shoulders above anything else we've had which for me is a decent argument for ranking him alongside the wingers who were head and shoulders above the rest in their respective eras'"
Your last paragraph surmises the situation pretty well. You don't recall Hicks going into touch as that is not how the game is played.
Conversely, there are numerous times that Des went in to touch as that was the norm; go outside.
sally, you say that Des wasn't as classy a finisher as Hicks. I am assuming you mean within 20/30 metres of the line which I guess I agree with.
As for the ability to score tries effectively out of nothing, I would have Des everyday. His ability to evade/swerve whilst still accelerating is something I have yet to see to this day.

I think you may have misinterpreted biscuit's words. My interpretation of his comments are that Hicks isn't our best winger of the past 48 years, which I agree with.

| Hicks is big & strong in the tackle and fast supporting play. Who will forget the game sealing try at Widnes against the Pies last year? He is very fit for his age and if he does stay, I for one wont complain.

| He's the best finisher in the league IMO. He scores tries that only other wingers would drem off.
See Murrayfield earlier this campaign.

| hicks is a very good winger and to find someone to do as good or even a better job would be very hard..on the subject of comparing wingers,if hicks came up against dessie..hicks would have one almighty game trying to keep dessie quiet...tho fossie dessie henare thackaray would do a very good job for us in super league..it something we`ll never ever know

| listen ...Im a wire fan first and foremost and hence a fan of Chris hicks...
what I can do is not get giddy about an overseas player that is a good honest pro ...and weve had some scandalous thiefs from overseas in the last few years, so I can understand where he gets his support from and rightly so....
however what gives you all away is the fact you all say he is "a great finisher".... "a classy finisher". This available for someone to use as a quote at a later date..."Henry Faafilli was a great finisher..."
Pat Richards by the way is the best finisher in the league will he get near Wigans top five best ever wingers......no not a chance
Des Drummond was a freak to dismiss him over Hicks is pathetic. imagine them on opposite wings for instance running at each other, which one is more likely to go round the other one on the outside with pace and which one is more likely to run right through the other with brute strength....?
your answer is des drummond on both occasions .......is someone going to suggest Des couldnt score the tries Hicks scores in the Corner as well ?
for those that think i'm being one eyed on Dessie....he had dodgy hands and wasnt someone you wanted under a high ball Chris hicks however is as safe as houses....

| 'Best finisher in the league' as many are saying is very subjective. Whilst Hicks is very good from 10m out, and he has great awareness of his touchline, anything further than 30m out and his finishing ability is actually very limited. His awareness of the touchline actually becomes a hindrence at this point for me, as he often plays the safety first option and steps inside and takes the tackle.
You rarely see him score anything other than diving in from 10m, and for me that means he is hard to judge as the best finisher.
People talk about Richards and Hicks, yet they are playing out wide in two very attacking teams, and actually Riley has scored every try that Hicks could (and more IMHO) this year.
He is a good player, however he isn't as safe as houses as people make out, his error count is worse than Riley's, in less games.
All that said, his tries at Murrayfield for example were brilliant.
