so if wigan merged with leigh you'd go and watch them then?
fans support their own teams not the game on the whole, the real problems with rugby league is that the decision makers in charge regularly get it wrong and show themselves to be amateurish at best.

| I still remember in 1995 when the merger with Widnes was avoided. Higham said at the time that he could foresee a time in the future when a merger would take place but possibly on an even bigger scale - he named us, Widnes, Wigan and Saints all merging as one to represent the area as a whole - to accommodate expansion teams in a more European game.
I'm not saying he was right but, hypothetically, if the above merger DID take place would anyone on here who supports any one of those four clubs support the new team?
I most definitely would not.

People always bring the anti-Catalan argument back to their lack of away support, which is ridiculous. Catalan are a sucessful, competitive RL team and have every right to be in Super League. Leigh, Halifax et al have all had their chance at the top flight and none of them have been good enough. You can't honestly tell me you'd rather watch Leigh getting tonked week in and week out and finishing bottom of the pile than a competitive Catalan side who actually gives other teams a game?

I really don't understand that attitude. I am a Warrington RL supporter but I am also an RL supporter. If everyone had your attitude our game would be nothing but memories.

Leigh's Super League season of 2005, however, proved a disaster and the club were relegated back to National League One after winning just two games. That season Leigh fans were criticised for the poor support after only gaining an avearage of 3,199 the lowest in Super League that season, just behind London who gained an average of 3,251.

If the rugby football league put as much effort into leigh, halifax. ect than thay have catalans then im sure thay would come good. if there sutch a big sucess then the french should start there own league. it just seems madness that a team not even in the same country is in the same league. thay have to travel to far and there away support is gash. IMO anyway.

Catalan Dragons was founded in 2001 in Perpignan, France, under the name "Union Treiziste Catalan"; following the merger of the successful XIII Catalan club and close neighbours Saint Estève,
Average home attendance 2009..... 9,159
seems our French Friends put us to shame then

Thats the issue though. Clubs like Halifax and Leigh are not stable. And unlikely to be stable for years to come.
It is sad the demise of clubs such as Featherstone, Halifax and Leigh. But superleague would be poorer place without Catalan. And i homestly think they will be in the top three (again) this year

yeah just a very poor one.....
I do feel Sorry for Halifax to an Extent as they were a decent superleague side ...finishing 3rd in 98 in fact,
and I always liked thrum hall and we beat them in the Premiership final.....
id rather Halifax be in the League than Wakefield..
but we cant hand pick superleague teams just because they are our favourites..... and Halifax's demise was their own doing...lets not forget they were cheating the salary cap in its early days....
I dont like the Welsh Idea at all $hit Team $hit Ground no Fans.... it brings nothing to "OUR" game while Catalan brings an awful lot.
but some of the less intelligent posters on here see a handfull of fans attending their away games and continue to say we should stick to the Heartlands

Mergers have worked in the NRL too. I'm not saying they definitely would not work here but I can say categorically that I definitely would not support a merged club formed from Warrington and another.
Would you?

and that third place finish cost them their superleague place in the long run, paying out for that with money they didn't have bolloxed them goodstyle, multiplied with the problems of the thrum hall money(did they ever get that?) and they lurched from financial crisis to financial crisis till they ended up playing an entire season with a salary cap of 500k or less, a team full of academy kids, and neil harmon.
meanwhile playing for (at that point) 3 years in a half finished stadium which is only now only just approaching completion.
Now i say this as a fan of halifax as well, i loved going to the shay, the new away stands are great terraces, especially after the roof got put on, but to say they deserve to be in over catalan is just plain daft at the moment, likewise when people were complaining about widnes being passed over for the franchises, they were only 8 months or so past their latest financial disaster in recent years, though admittedly this bloke they've got in charge appears to have his head(and heart) in the right place and in good shape for the next round of applications.
TBH i can't really think of anyone who's been in and relegated from SL who's a good candidate to be elected back in, though you can quite easily point the same finger at some current SL clubs, only they look at bit shinier.
