Quote marshman777="marshman777"The Heanare try was a classic, memory is patchy but I think Sculthorpe ran at the ref and moved him out of the way for Henare to power through.'"
No the Ref impeded a Saints player because of how we set the move up.
remember this was in the days when everyone lined up and packed down in their normal positions, so backs out of the scrum, and loose forward at the base of the scrum. The Scrum half would feed the scrum and then run to the base of the scrum and pick it up himself and pass or run.
This play however, the scrum half - Willie Swann put the ball in the Scrum and then back peddled away from the scrum and out to the wing. Scully picked the ball up and I guess Saints players expected this was a play between the loose forward and Scrum half because Scully ran towards the wing with Swann. But instead of passing to Swann, he dropped off a flying Henare back on the inside who went the full Length.
As Scully and Willie Swann both headed for the Wing the Referee went that way too - to clear the scrum area - but he Collected a Saints player on the way and that made the gap for Henare even bigger ..
But Saints winger and a recent selection for the England team Danny Arnold, was marking no one on his wing and couldn't get near Henare it was a superb try.
