| Given performances so far this year, one is tempted to think that maybe PC was a genius coach to get this lot to perform even occasionally as well as they did. More importantly, the dead end in skill we seem to have reached does show that probably the weakest area of PC's coaching ability was judgment of player quality. King ( although he fooled plenty of other coaches , too), Monaghan, Rauhihi, the Andersons, Bridge and others are clearly quite ordinary players once removed from teams of giants around them. I agree with sally cinnamon that there is little point in making emergency changes now. By season end a large group of players will be out of contract and I think we may see seven or eight leave, four or five new British players brought in, a couple of substitutions of big-ticket Aussies and the promotion of one or two juniors to the first team squad.
For 2009, we need to accept that teams like Cas who did their own rebuilding in previous seasons are clearly better than we are, so no point in booing when we lose to a team that is obviously superior.

| Quote sally cinnamon="sally cinnamon"Don't have nightmares people.
The one about us losing the franchise, is not going to happen. We've got the stadium, facilities and a junior development programme better than most of the others, and this will keep us in even if we have some poor seasons on the field. Leigh haven't got a chance of a franchise, Widnes have a slim chance and I think more credibly Toulouse will have a strong bid in 2011....the vulnerable clubs are going to be the ones who scraped through with Grade C franchise applications last time not a Grade A like us.
Warrington will turn things around now. The decisions that needed to be made have been made, the right people are on board steering the ship now, Smith heading up the first team and Bastian the junior set up.
Tony Smith has inherited the legacy of a number of years of poor decision making. If we were still in a relegation system then I think a few short term signings would come in to steady the ship but now we're in an Australian system he'll approach it like the Aussie coaches do when they come to struggling clubs and lay down foundations that take a while to kick in. In his first season as a head coach at Hudds, he lost the first 15 games of the season, and in the final 13 games they picked up six wins and a draw - if that form had been repeated over the full season they'd have been in the top six, but it meant they finished with the wooden spoon which then meant relegation. There's no relegation for us this season.
I think we should sit back chill out and view this as an opportunity to have a season where the results don't matter as much as finding things out about players. Smith will have a number of new players coming in 2010 who will improve the side, but he is going to need to select a core of existing players to take the club forwards....the rest of this year will decide who.'"
Sally I totally agree with your well reasoned post from a rugby perspective, however I am concerned about the business implications of effectively giving up on this season in the pursuit of "jam tomorrow".
Just the loss of revenue from turnstyle receipts alone concern me. For example the same fixture against Castleford in May 2006 had an attendance of 9,508 compared with yesterday's 8,202. What is worse is that I suspect Castleford brought a lot more travelling support this year than then due to Easter and their recent performances.

I would say that is open to debate, the West Stand was about a third full indicating a crowd of about 1200. When I looked across I thought the away crowd was quite sp relative to usual Cas following. Add to that, they had come off a bit of a spanking on Good Friday.
That said, away crowds should have no bearing on the overall attendance, as your core support should be more than enough to overcome any small attendance from away supporters.
Commercially, we are fighting for a slice of a shrinking pie, it is unfortunate that we sweeping through with a new broom in such difficult times.

Yes this will work. If you are unhappy don't bother coming. Next game 2000 attendance. Next season no money,no players, no hope. Season after that lose the franchise. Season after that the true supporters can watch the team bump around the National Leagues.
Genius.

I'm not so sure the pie is shrinking. The RFL are consistently telling us that SL attendances are increasing year on year though. The facts also state that the average attendance for the regular season in 2008 was 10,338 (a Super League record) this was up from 9,855 in 2007 which was previously the record.
In terms of aggregate attendances in 2008 this was 1,674,809 up from 1,537,326 for 2007. This is the seventh consequetive year since 2001 that the the regular season average attendance and aggregate attendance had increased from the previous year.
Obviously we are only part way through 2009 (and the much discussed economic conditions) and we can only judge at the end of the season. However the RFL are boasting a record attendance for the 4th round of the 2009 Challenge Cup here. www.therfl.co.uk/home/news_item_top.php?id=13617
Simply put, I remain concerned at the drop off in support and believe, if it is unchecked, will start to have a significant impact on the finances of the club.

I'm not referrng to support, the commercial reference was to sponsorship. Due to the drop-off in season ticket sales, and I imagine we are not on our own there, we are pursuing sponsorhip, far more aggressively whilst other clubs are doing exactly the same.
Our downfall is when we are pressed for our achievements on the field, afterall, success attracts the pennies, very little else, although we are fortunate our Community programme does stand us in good stead there. The stadium move with it's commercial momentum and feelgood factor, has long since diminshed.

OK my posts were related just to attendances. I thought you were countering that you imagined the Castleford attendance yesterday to be lower than 2007 and that economic conditions in general affecting ticket sales could be used to explain the difference of a 15% drop compared with 2 years earlier.
On the season ticket issue, I would suggest if SL attendances are indeed increasing year on year and each season a record aggregate attendance is broken, it would be reasonable to assume that season tickets across the sport would be increasing in proportion.
I would suggest that commerical sponsorship revenue is hit more in a recession rather than attendance revenue.
Either way, it's not good news and that was my point.

Totally agree. What I will add to the attendance comment though, is the amount of people who have given up on buying a ticket due to the games being switched from Sunday. Was it something like eight home games played on a Sunday last season?

| The club has one less person on the commercial team (having gone to media). Hopefully they have found someone else as it is going to get harder to get sponsorship from the traditional places.
Look like the south stand is up for sponsorship again soon too.

With this attatude, ur not going to get any better either, did you forget that we beat you at your own ground last year too, and that was while we WAS at the bottom of SL. This year year where are not. Its clear you have no respect for teams that did not finish above you last year.
Get a grip. This years going to be a battle, and your team needs your SUPPORT
