Not content to have been shown his backside on the Wigan forum for this, apparently Rogue's wants to be shown up on the Wire board too.

Not at any point does it say that the defenders must be behind the referee.
It does say this though:
Quote Rogues GalleryIndicating ten metres The Referee should usually position himself ten metres behind and to one side of the point at which the ball is played as a guide to the team not in possession. If tackling is excessively keen or play is unnecessarily rough, the referee may forsake the ten metres position in order to be nearer the players involved in the tackle.'"
Basically, and for those of the hard of hearing, the referee is the arbiter of the 10m and while he may usually stand 10m back, he's the man to decide and his position shouldn't be taken as the definitive indicator of the 10m.
