It isn't in itself a panacea for the sport's ills we need to generate interest and attract more participants to our sport as we will not be competing financially with RU or the NRL anytime soon'"
Absolutely, if we didn't put something in place it would reduce the quality of the competition and there simply isn't enough money in the game presently to support a greater cap increase.
We need to consolidate our current position then push for a bigger tv contract from 2021.

I know, but I just think clubs will, spend the extra cap throughout the squad to keep who they have, make sure they are left with a squad.
And as for a second marquee player, how many clubs have even one marquee player?

Dramatic is a good word.
A bit of extreme shock can often get results with unruly characters.

It's a fair argument that the cap is also what is holding back investors who will pour money into the game however don't want to be told they can only spend 2m on players wages. There's a fine balance and if this increase was 5/6 years ago it would have had much more of an impact than it would do now. It's a plaster where stitches are needed
We have stated that the quality in SL is as low as many can remember but we're happy to eneble us to keep the same pool in SL ??
I think that the Rfl need to be waving the tv rights to BT and play hardball with sky over getting more money

| I think people get over worked up about losing players to the NRL.
It's not the end of the world if British players find their way over to the best competition and if we had an England team of which 10 or so were leading players in the NRL it would make for a much more competitive international game.
I wonder if they have this stress in New Zealand about how many of their players play in Australia....should they be doing more to try and make NZ players stay in their national competition?

Possibly, although there are hardly a line of investors telling us that. The investors at Toronto seem happy enough with the situation, maybe they like the fact the salary cap is quite low, as it means they can compete without spending to RU levels as they grow their business?
I'd agree that stitches are needed, but to keep the medical analogy going, you're not cured from your first antibiotic tablet, you need to finish the course. For me, this is a step in the right direction, the only way we can push the salary cap forward is to secure a greater TV contract.
Rightly or wrongly we have our current deal till 2021, hopefully this will allow us to keep, and potentially attract better players, to leave us in a better position for further cap growth in 2022 onwards.

But the income isn't there to support that level of wage bill, and even wealthy owners aren't going to keep covering that size of shortfall, year after year.
One thing that has received too little attention is the exemption for young players earning £20k or less. Hopefully that will encourage more investment in clubs' youth sides.

How many SL cubs are running reserve sides? Hull, Saints, Warrington, Wigan?
There doesn't appear to be an appetite to run them, whish I find baffling.

I think most clubs simply can't afford them - except Leeds who want the DR / feeder club approach. Wire stated how much money they spent on the Reserves last year in an attempt to encourage more clubs to participate, but other than HKR it didn't result in much change.

| It seems to get overlooked that you can't just magic a mature, experienced player out of thin air.All good players have to come through a youth system to develop , whether from a UK or overseas youth system & one day whatever talent is in our game at the moment will dry up. No club can afford to fund a team of expensive imports & without a reliable youth system the game will disappear & we all know what we are watching now is a shadow of what the game used to be.

I expect if there was a poll to increase ticket prices to pay for these extra wages there would be a number of pathetic luddites on here who wanted to freeze them and not let the game move forwards and keep its top talent.

Thing is , looking around I see plenty of mediocre and average joes, but don't see much of what I would class as top talent, certainly when compared to seasons past.
