Atkins wouldn't cut it as a second rower, he's better out along the edges, always where he burns to be, bullying smaller 3/4s.'"
Haven't you got an "issue" with one of your centres
I'd keep quiet, before you go having a pop at one of ours, if I were you

Yep, you are right:
Great bench.
Having said that, in later years Noone was asked to 'man-mark' Farrell on a few occasions and it worked quite brilliantly.

| What is it with decent centres from Wakefield. Are they destined to all end up playing second row. Ellis, Westwood and suggestions of Atkins. Far too many British centres have transferred to the pack but has left GB / England short of depth in those positions. Some player have been moved out of necessity ( Gary Mercer under Johno) due to injuries and were very effective some were moved to second row as they lost their speed. When you look at the Aussie second rowers over the last 10 to 15 years there has been a lot of grunt, aggression and hard work and less emphasis on finnesse. See Thaiday, Hindmarsh and Tallis. Westwood and Harrison are more like these players but I just can't see Atkins putting in that type of shift. Over the same time scale we have sent international teams out to play with the likes of Wilkin and Gilmour who in their own right are good players just a different type of player that was pulling on the Australian Jersey.

| Agreed. Westwood did not have a lot of finnesse when playing at centre which makes him better suited to the Australian model of second rowers. British teams have looked to centres to provide extra pace and class in the back row and I don't think that was the answer. I think Tony Smith has shown us that your back three does not have to have players with the pace of Mark Roberts to succeed.

To be fair, I remember a game vs. Wigan at Wilderspool that we did win (2000?) when Penny was on the wing. Farrell for some reason kept peppering Penny with high kicks on the wing, all game. Pretty stupid really, since he was a FB by trade and if I remember rightly dealt with every single bomb that was put up to him. And it was especially stupid because, for some reason, Hunte was at FB and wasn't quite as good at dealing with bombs as Penny, and we had a very short, out-jumpable, Rob Smyth on the opposite wing

Atkins is more a centre for me than Ellis and Westwood were. Atkins is actually what I was expecting Westwood to be in 2002, when we signed Westwood and Plange said he was the next Keith Senior I thought we were getting someone who was a bit raw but would be a rampaging centre with good pace and a strong runner, but Westwood was a disappointment for his first two and a half seasons until we re-signed Kohe-Love and he took his place, then Noone got injured, and the rest was history.

| My biggest problem with Westwood as a centre was he had perhaps a little bit too much confidence in his pace. This often resulted in him trying to run around the outside of someone and him getting bundled in to touch.
Bloody glad we moved him in the pack though, great second rower.

I don't think he had much choice as Nat Wood always gave him the ball about 2 foot from the touchline.

| Ryan atkins is not a forward, he is a back. Yes he has a bit of strength but would not make it in the forwards.
If it aint broke then dont poke.
