You could make a case for Monaghan although the player has to take some of the responsibility.

The argument has some merit monkeyman.
But it doesnt explain post 2003 nor does it explain the late 80's and early 90's finals and successes. I'm not sure we were rolling it in then?

1st of all the players were to blame for the world cup hence the reason TS didn't get the sack, TS has nothing to prove at club level and his reputation is second to none, the Warrington board have put all faith in TS and because of his reputation they will allow him to do what he wants and when he wants so TS will have no problems with the Warrington board.'"
Understand your stance, but I'd like to take a slightly different view albeit still positive -
I was critical of the TS signing because I honestly believed that whilst he was good I didn't think he was world class. The 2 reasons for that were-
1. The fiasco of a World Cup. Yes the players must take a lot of responsibility but so too must the coach. I really don't feel he got the team to gell as a team. There was the Leeds clique and Saints clique and he couldn't address that in the time he had. IMO that was a big failing, BUT he's proved to me that he can get a team of underachievers playing to closer to their potential when he's working on a longer term basis and that all bodes well for us.
2. Although he achieved at Leeds he did still inherit a very good squad (like at Warrington - although in our case it's more about potential). In his last season I think he saw the writing on the wall and was pushed before he jumped. He did win trophies though.
He is a good club coach and you can see he understands the game and especially the tactics.
I think he's proven himself at club level but there's still more to prove. If he could take a team that's not wn anything and turn it into a trophy winning side then i think he'll have added to his cv.
Sorry for the long mail but it's a really interesting thread.
I don't think he'll have any issues with the board as the results will do the talking.
In conclusion I think if he can turn us into trophy winners and then continual challengers, then he'll have shown himself to be one of the best.
On the whole I'm hopeful that my original doubts will have been proved to be misplaced

2003 we were still at Wilderspool haemorrhaging cash. 2004/2005 for mine was a period of stability, 2006 onwards, which is pretty much our time spending the full cap, this would have been our time to start imposing ourselves on finals, but we have no divine right to oust the likes of Leeds and Saints.
We must have had some cash in the late 80's/early 90's as we were signing the likes of Andy Gregory and Jonathan Davies. From memory it was about 95/96 where we really started to hit the skids.
Regarrding Smith, if Leeds were so hot, why had they not won anything since 1999? He gained them a pot by his second season.

Wasnt Monoghan in the Aussie league dream team before coming to us? Sullivan was rated. Matt King is a shadow of his former self. Even Rauhihi although has got better was a laughing stock for the first season and a half.

Who mentioned ruining Harris?
The point about Harris is,that he was poached by Leeds via a 3rd party, the same is happening with us and Myler.and imo,the sooner the rfl, clamp downt on this the better, just to prove that the franchise system works and not that the farce that its turned into.
And imo,the sooner

Hertel (sponsors) bankrolled Davies IIRC (Widnes could not pay his contract), not sure about Andy Greg but we were semi-pro then anyway. Period 2006 onwards wasnt to do with divine rights, we were'nt even on the same page to compete due to choice of coach.
It would be interesting to know why, this skint club (as you moot), could afford the likes of Blake, Boyd, Roach, Davidson et al in a pre-SL era without TV money.

Didn't we ruin Halliwell? I remember people with bucket collections trying to keep him as he was THAT good. Then he went into oscurity after our touch.
Maybe people are thinking we ruined Noone, Hulse, Durbin, Alstead, Sibbit too (the list is long). Or maybe they were never, ever, good enough.
We didn't seem to ruin Scully or Harris.

first point, bucket colllections, never happened,2nd point all these were not goood enough anyway, third point our crooked chairman sold them and trousered the cash, hence simon came in and sorted the clubs finances out and here we are.
