I will ask again because nobody ever seems to answer (or know!) but where the feck is Hayes?
He has a bad hamstring injury on the same leg that he broke his ankle.

| Hayes is having ?complications? is what I was told, his leg is now slightly shorter which is causing issues when he starts running as there is additional pressure on joints / hamstring etc.
Wrench was doing well but his recovery slowed down a bit and needed a tidy up operation. Initially was expected to be an April return but now expected just after Magic Weekend - think there was an article in the Guardian about it.

I haven't seen Irwin play - but he's thought of very highly at the club. My concern would be throwing him in at 17 against a team like Saints who will play with lots of intensity.
Nothing against you personally but this kind of post really annoys me. I see this kind of post a lot oh we can?t play x,y or z against this or that team. Why not, it?s the best way to learn imo. We will learn nothing from him playing against Salford reserves etc. He as been selected for the Lancashire Academy Squad so is clearly highly thought of. He was in last week?s 21 and agin in this one, I hope it?s not just for experience around the first team learning how to order coffee. I?m absolutely for young players getting opportunities, you?ll see I?ve been critical in the past about signing players like Greg Minikin as they block player pathways in my view. All I?m doing is raising a point that the coaching team may take the view he isn?t physically developed enough yet - I?ve heard plenty of coaches talk about this previously - Tony Smith, Gary Chambers etc. Just because one 17 year old (Lindop) is ready doesn?t mean every 17 year old is physically ready for a SL game. As I say, no idea if this applies to Irwin or not - just wondering really.

I fully get that, just adding him to the 21 for 2 weeks now I don?t see the point, they all have to come through at some level, let him play. Seems Saints finally giving the kid a run at half back.

Irwin played on Good Friday in a 60-Nil hammering of Leigh Academy. He isn`t going to develop and extend himself playing in games like that which are just glorified training sessions. If he plays against Saints he will definitely be targeted by them in our defensive line, but we won`t know how he copes until he plays 1st grade. He has a similar height and physique to Sam Tomkins and loads of confidence in his own ability. Sneyd and Irwin are the only genuine halfbacks in our 21 man squad, and seeing that he would be opposing a Saints half who is only a year older than him, I would be tempted to select Irwin to play on Thursday night.

| I can understand the need for Irwin to be in and around the squad at the moment even if he doesn't play. If we pick up another injury to Sneyd, Walker or Powell then he will need to be ready and training with the first team squad will help in case that day comes. Burgess' press conference appeared to suggest he was sticking with Walker in the halves and I don't have any objections to that. But on the same principal I would have expected to see Ben Harthill in the squad as cover at hooker should we need it.
Some strange selections from Burgess recently. I would like to see Currie at right second row. I know he has done a great job as a ball playing 13 but I don't think we have solved the problem created by Nicholson's departure and Russell is definitely not the answer. I would go with Yates and Crowther rotating at 13 and have Currie at Right second row. I like Holroyd and Tai as they are pretty solid defensively but I think we need a bit more threat on that edge.

| Burgess has said Irwin will be 18th man. Looks like he still going with Walker, if I didn?t know any better I?d say he is just sticking two fingers up at the journalists.

Doubling down - guess that's his call. I've not seen any comments anywhere suggesting Walker at 6 worked. It just weakened us at 9.

Maybe it will, but we might already be out of contention for both trophies by then. I don't like to be pessimistic but I have just looked at our fixture list for May, and I would be pleasantly surprised if we won any of those games.

Walker may get better at 6, but what about his vacated hooker position? Also what happened to next man up?

Seriously though this season is a million miles away from last and the next man up thing is clearly blown out the water now because of results and frustration. Clear thinking as left the building.

| I understand picking Walker at 6. He will defend against Sironen and Percival which is the stronger edge for Saints, so can expect a lot of traffic. If Irwin is picked, he would have a tough job and either side of him in Tai and either Holroyd/Russell have not had any real consistency playing together, so Walkers communication would be a benefit.
Either way, that right side is highly unlikely to win you the game tonight. But it could lose it.
While I understand the frustration of the ?next man up? mantra not being adopted, there has to be a realistic view that a lot of players have missed games so far. Everyone but Walker, Powell, Currie, Vaughan and Philbin (I think) have missed games, and it?s only round 9. Conversely, other than numbers 7, 20, 22, 25, 27, 29, 30, 32 every other squad number has had game time. With 7 and 20 still on long term injury, 30 out on season long loan and I think each of the rest of them are or have played out at London, Bradford or Widnes (might be wrong with Tupaea). Note, Irwin not included, I must admit I hadn?t seen much of him before last week. But, the squad is being used and exposed to playing in competitive matches, but also being rested and rotated for the longevity of the season.
Last season we conquered the middle section of the season (aside from Wembley), and came away with nothing. I?m not saying that were intentionally underperforming, but I do wonder whether there is an intention to manage players better and arrive at the back end better prepared to challenge, rather than have Dufty and Williams coming off playing 25+ games at 100mph and just not having it in the tank when it actually counts. But, non of that is worth anything outside of the 6, we have to keep pace with that second batch, Hull, Saints, Leigh & Leeds.
