| Quote: "Nice to see some positive comments about Wane.
I’ll openly admit he talks rubbish at times but he’s been great for us and it’ll be tough to see him walk away. He seems to have this rep in some quarters as a thug and as not being a nice bloke but the way members of the press have spoke about him today paint him in a totally different light. Gary Carter tweeted that he’s a gent and said he’ll never forget when he took the time to go and visit him in hospital after he’d been attacked and left in a coma in London.'"
Pre-match at the KCOM, he's always spending time talking to the kids teams and having photos taken with them. No other coach has done this that I've noticed

| Feels odd that Wane is being lost to RL.
Remember about 10 years back, people were saying why are the young British coaches not coming through? Where is our coaching talent going to come from? The dominant coaches of the recent era are McDermott and Wane but neither now have a job in RL.
I think Wane has been a very significant Wigan coach because he's delivered them success but without the advantages many of his Wigan predecessors had in being better placed than any rival club to sign elite British or Aussie players. He's had to make smart signings in the recruitment market, often of players who weren't obvious names, but largely he has done it through bringing through a vast crop of home grown players. They have got a great team culture, not really big egos, just get their heads down and work for each other. Where Joel Tomkins acted like a tool earlier this season he got moved on. He hasn't waved the big chequebook power of the famous Wigan around and he's not gone for box office signings, he's just built a largely local team that has a very admirable culture.
He's had a fair bit of stick including from his own supporters (as has McDermott) but his record is outstanding.
He also comes across as a good guy. He seems like the kind of guy who if he was an U10s coach you would feel you could leave your kid with him and expect the kid to learn something not only about RL but some good character lessons in life.
And now he's going to Scottish RU?? WTF?? Is there no club in Super League who would benefit from Wane as their coach? What about coaching England?

| He's not really leaving for Scot RFU.
He's got a advisory role that requires only 1 day of work a week

| I'm sure he is a lovely fella, probably owns a cat called Tomkins, makes his own damson jam and lists S-Club7 as his all time favourite band.
But he also delivered a half time speech advocating foul play, and did little to discourage his players from indulging in cannonball tackles and going in feet first on players in the act of scoring. Not to mention tripping.
Successful, undoubtedly. Motivational, certainly. A DNA hybrid of Homer Simpson, Captain Caveman and OdBod from Carry On Screaming - absolutely.

Good God man, have a word with yourself. Luckily the overwhelming majority of wire fans are capable of reason and have written and responded with much dignity after Saturday.
I guess there's always one...

I'm with you on this one. Two years ago most Wigan fans wanted him out. How times have changed. The real reason he is leaving Wigan is the "Tomkins drunken aga" & the signing of "druggy drunken Hardaker"

| Just a note to the hypocrites on here. This thread has nothing to do with Saturday, when wigan thoroughly deserved to win, and there's no doubt Wane's "methods" have delivered success.
However, most fans have spent his entire tenure attacking his players for foul play, pre-meditated plans to injure key players and the behaviour of both Tomkins brothers, Bateman, Flowrs etc.
You know what? They took their cue from the coach.
If Tomkins had been sent off on Saturday resulting in a a Wire win, do you think Wane would have come out post match and said "yeah fair cop theres no place in our game for that".
You can't slag off Tomkins for foul play then laud the man who coached him.
I'm not the one who needs to get over myself.

| When judging his success as a coach the question is, given the players at his disposal could he have won as much playing entertaining rugby? Depending on your answer will show what you think of him as a coach.

Absolutely spot on. Even yesterday Wigan fans were on record as saying they hoped his departure would herald a change in style.
In Shaun Edwards they have a man who is likely to deliver success. He is [ialso[/ia proven winer (Mr Duck) but has always done it with class, professionalism, style and without the need to advocate, even instruct, the decapitation of his opponents.

| It's a pity we didn't advocate the same tactics. We may have won the game then.
Lets show some respect in defeat. He's a brilliant coach and a winner. They deserved to win.

I have already pointed out they deserved to win. Read [ithen[/i respond.
This thread is about his tenure as coach and my posts about him are nothing to do with jealousy, or an attack on his superb record but at the hypocrites who slagged his tactics off for years and now laud him as a genius.

| Fella admitted himself that he was a turd as a kid. Begged Wigan for a job, as he even said that he'd've ended up in prison, if they hadn't.
Wasn't much better a player. Thug springs to mind.
Coaches in the same manner. Cannonball tackles approved of, encouraged even. General sh1thousedness from his sides. If the cap fits, etc.
I don't care how many babies he's kissed, politician style. Oaf. And that's the only positive thing I could say about him, without me getting a clip behind the ear off my mother, if she heard me.

Aaah Lefty, I've been expecting you. Knew I could rely on you. Mr Tomkins walks off into the sunset with a ban for foul play and his mentor with the praise of his victims ringing in his ears. Twas always thus.
Funny old game, as Greavsie would say.

I don't like to disappoint (Mrs Goldblatt would argue, though).
As for the subsequent Tomkins banning. Hilarious, NOT.
As you said, miaw, was it ever thus. Bar a repeat of Flower's thuggery, or a Cantona style Kung-fu kick, a Wigan player would have to be accused of Regicide to cop for a red card in a final.
Wigan getting away with it? Who'd've thunk it?
