I would miss you on SW40 Charlie....btw were Wane's Wigan that bad to watch?

Admittedly, I only saw them against us or in Finals so 'only' was quit a few times, but my view was that they were uncompromising up front and a bit stylized across the back, how many times would that ball be shipped across in similar fashion wearing you down till the gap was created? You could see most of their moves unfolding but eventually they'd finish it off through constant pressure.

Also, I'm not convinced that you can appoint a coach because he's been a success and say "we'll have none of that here thank you" it compromises both sides of any argument about success or failure. We could end up like United and Mourinho it was always a bad fit totally different philosophies

Is this you or have you been hacked?

Well, I can only judge by what I get from watching a RL match. Sure I wan't to see my team win, but I also wan't to be entertained, and the Wigan matches I saw didn't float my boat. As for style of play, would Steve Price in Oz have allowed all the offloading we see at the HJ ? He is very much a conservative coach with the one aspect of our play that he did improve was defence. My guess would be KFP explained to him the differences between the Oz style of play and the UK and asked him to succeed with that in mind.

Wane is a very good candidate. I like the grit and determination he brings to his teams, plus the work he did with the Wigan Academy before that, but the goals should be set by the club, and I would hope they would be " win and entertain".

I suppose my approach to style versus winning the GF is that the most enjoyment I had from watching rugby was TS’s team in its pomp.Yes I wish it had come with a GF, but boy did I enjoy the ride.

That’s rumours on Twitter - not my information. I’m not saying it’s Powell.

Yes I agree that the club (the employer) needs to set the goals for the coach (the employee). My question is that it's important to try and get the right fit hence the Jose analogy as winning with style wasn't his thing and if you don't then there's likely to be disappointment.

The 'Holy Grail' "win and entertain" might be in Wane's locker (did Wigan have different goals) but if it isn't should we be surprised and rightly disappointed if we ended up being a version of 'his' Wigan? Ultimately as only one of those attributes is empirical then the likelihood is that sooner or later, depending upon the hierarchy of those goals either the club, Wane or the supporters will get fed up. Wane "I won" Club "but were boring" OR Club "you lost" Wane "but I entertained".

From my perspective, I'd like to be fed up of winning GF's first and foremost and look forward to seeing the other good things that he seemed to engender in his teams like the importance of the academy and production line, a structured team ethic with a do or die run through a brick wall mentality.

Finally were Wigan really that boring?

the loss of around 4 thousand paying spectators over his tenure would suggest eventually so.

if anyone is having performance issues with the site, its probably due to leeds just announcing that kyle eastmond has signed for them

I don't think Wigan were boring, simply not as entertaining as others.

In Wane's first season in charge, they scored nearly 1,000 points.

But most importantly, he won three Grand Finals in eight seasons.

Well I suppose all supporters needs would sit on a line with winning at one end and entertaining at the other. Everybody will think differently. Neutrals of course will not, they will wan't to see entertaining rugby, tightly contested, with a result only known on the 90 min hooter. I think I read an article in the Guardian a few weeks ago about Eddie Jones the Eng. RU coach visiting us to see how their game could be made more entertaining by increasing the number of tries. Despite the big crowds their games bring in for internationals, they are still painfully aware that it needs to be a spectacle and entertaining. So I hope / expect that in any job interview the need to develop entertaining rugby appears pretty high up.

I think if Wane does get the job we have a pretty good chance of success, and I suspect most people on here will feel more bullish than that . But of course as well as 'entertaining but lost', 'boring but won' there is also a third option of ' boring and lost'. But as Oz coaches are probably out at the moment (Covid and cost) that doesn't leave us with many viable options. I think Powell would put us consistently in the top 2-3 simply because he ensures the basic commitment and rugby are professionally delivered. I am not convinced he would win us the GF though. Wane could certainly win it, but it needs to be good to watch for my money.

I wouldnt say Wigan were boring, but I didnt like the wrestle and niggling that they did. I used to wind me up something proper when you saw Sam Tomkins trapping a defenders arm and then rolling over and gaining a penalty. I hated those sort of tactics that were employed, however being a hypocrite would i mind as much if it was us and we won the GF? I dont know.

Wigan always had that play where they swept it from one side to the other under Wane which was very successful and always seemed to score. IMO we were the better team when played them back in the GF however he always had a way of lifting them. We were the nice boys of the league (apart from Benny).

Perhaps the contrast between boring & entertaining can be highlighted by what is likely to bring spectators to RL in general. I am definitely in the entertainment camp & any silverware is a bonus. I've mentioned before on here that the biggest help to winning the play offs is being able to "play the ref". That has helped to beat us in at least 2 GFs. Perhaps to win the big one we need a coach who can teach his team to "play the ref ".

I have been scratching my head wondering why England had been absolutely abysmal this 6 nations.

No-one else seems bothered that Wane has never taken a club on from scratch before - he'd been at Wigan for years before graduating to head coach, and as such knew many of the squad & academy players already. There's no guarantee he'll be able to replicate that in the short time he'll be given (by many Wires fans) to deliver the SL GF win.

I'm also of the opinion that SW (or whoever replaces SP) will be brought in with the ultimate aim of winning a GF. Nothing changes in that respect. I guess we'd mostly want to see that achieved, regardless of the style that it's done in. But once that box has been ticked off, we'd be back to wanting a more entertaining and expansive game. Hopefully, the next custodian of the head coaches chair will have a team that maybe meets us half way, as I think that's the most likely outcome we'd get that fits the "have your cake and eat" it scenario.
