| Quote: Captain Hook "Based on results I would go Murphy 1st, Hill pipping Des for second.
Bradford for me is a difficult one. I never warmed to Bridge. Didn’t we sign both J Wood and K Kelly from there?'"
Woods yes. Bridge was class when he wanted to be. No secret I was a fan. Hicks and Monas were superb beside him. A great winger is only as good as his centre.

| A few forgotten from back in the day...
Bradford - Gary Mercer had a great few seasons for us (particularly 1991-92 when we ended 4th, above strong Widnes and Leeds teams) when we were mostly a mediocre team. Shame he went off to Leeds.
Widnes - David Lyon, as above, but also left at the end of 1991-92, to Saints. Largely forgotten about because Lee Penny stepped up to replace him, and Lyon struggled with injuries at Saints, but he was solid defensively and one of the best 'attacking' full backs I've seen, joining the line to great effect.

Lyon also had a howitzer of a kick, always good for a few extra yards.

I'm pretty sure that he was. He did play for a season in Australia (Bulldogs) but was back with Widnes when we signed him. Widnes were in financial difficulties at the time but I can't remember whether we or not we paid a fee for him.

Not sure if RL was quite the same as football, but until the Bosman ruling in the mid 90's, contracts and leaving a club was not as straightforward as it is nowadays. At the end of contracts it was more about a mutual agreement between club and player for a player to leave a club. Certainly it was a lot harder for a player to just walk away.
With the case of Jiffy, it was more he was on a lucrative deal with Widnes, which they couldn't afford to pay. We were offered him, which we agreed to, so we took on his deal, whilst having to pay no fee to Widnes - The benefit to them being having him off their wages. In theory, Jiffy could have dug his heels and stayed and basically bankrupt them.
Overall, it was a sensible deal for all parties.

| There doesn't appear to be much successful business from Leeds, well certainly not that I can think of. Any thoughts on personnel that I might have missed, or a reason why not?

Richie Mathers...
The only reasons I can think of is that Leeds are always more a buying club than a selling one?
Also, until recently, a lot of transfers were usually among teams from the same county - Not many players were up for moving houses or driving fairly long distances to play, as the wages didn't really make it worthwhile.

Correct. Widnes had just declared a ÂŁ300,000 annual loss.
We simply took over his contract. He was offered around apparently, with Wakefield and Castleford also seriously interested and willing to pay his wages too, but he chose Warrington so as to not have to travel/move house and uproot his kids from school.
This is all according to Code Breaker, his autobiography. He is scathing about how Warrington then tried to get a fee for him when he wanted to leave.

Yes Leeds bring through a lot of players through their own Academy so a lot of the players that move on from Leeds live locally anyway. Also lots of the other Yorkshire clubs (including lower leagues) have coaches/officials with some kind of contact to Leeds, so I think when players leave Leeds they find it easier to get fixed up with another team nearby.
Maybe a similar reason explains why Wiganers that don't make it have often joined us, and our surplus goes off to Salford, Widnes or Leigh.

Widnes were in dire financial problems, and we picked up Jiffy on a free transfer.
We also signed Andy Gregory from Widnes, but Jiffy was better value for money. Greg moved to Wigan, as his wife wanted to finance a new house, so I was told.

I liked Mathers, a decent sort and never let us down, so good shout on the face of it but does he count as he didn't come directly from Leeds?

I'm struggling to think of any players that came from Headingley, but can name a few going t'other way.

Leeds is a puzzler. The best I can do is the re signing of Gary Ming Mercer (unless my memory is playing tricks).
