| Shout out to Jack Hughes who again got through a ton of work in attack and defence. Daryl Clark was also immense today. Him, Ratchford and Russell from dummy half were brilliant. And while I'm on, well done George King - another strong performance. Just trying to focus on the less obvious superstars for a bit!

| ....at long last, the Penny haters are no where to be seen.
I've loved the lad from the day he took the mickey at Leeds in 2006. Sheer excitement.
I've had to bite my bottom lip when I'm stood next to a hater, spitting beer out of his mouth when Penny's knocked on/missed a tackle (you'd think he's the only Wire player ever to have done such things).
His defence has improved. His catching is as good as any full-back in SL. He still has his greatest weapon, speed. He scores brilliant tries. I've NEVER got the hate for him. Still, as we all know, some people HAVE to have a scapegoat. Wouldn't be the same without 'em.
Keep on improving, Kevin.

The biggest improvement in Penny for me is his ability to clear his line and make yardage. His leg drive and body position is really good and I can't remember the last time he got pushed backwards. He has always been great under the high ball and I've also got a sneaky feeling he could play in the halves at a push

| Someone mentioned it elsewhere about Jon Clarke's contribution. Well today I thought it really showed. Widnes were puffing like good 'uns with around 20mins to go, whereas we looked like we could have done another 40, a testament to good conditioning. Also for what it's worth, I thought Gidley just nipped Sandow for MoM in my opinion. Great all round performance apart from their tries which were a bit sloppy. Happy days

| Do we know the extent of russells injury yet? I feel sorry for the lad, he always seems to get those niggly ankle injuries.

| As someone who has never played RL at any level other than in PE at school, I've nothing but admiration for the likes of Penny, Russell, Lineham etc who made those catches today. It would have frightened me to death.

| the defensive effort early doors in the2nd half has IMMENSE! Widnes thew literally everything they had at us and we just threw them back. Soaked it up,...then went up a gear. Top quality stuff. Big shout out to Penny, Lineham and Russell for taking all those high bombs. Thought Clarke was excellent, as was Hughes...actually they were ALL superb...to a man. Happy days indeed! Great atmosphere in the ground as well....from both sets of supporters...fair play to Widnes' fans....they contributed to an excellent match day atmosphere.

| A few random thoughts on the game;
What a difference a full HJ makes to the atmosphere, I thought it was fantastic with all the chanting. Last season you could get into any match as a walk-up, but perhaps the flexi ticket is the way to go this season as it essentially reserves you a place at any game.
I was very impressed with Widnes. They were really well drilled, got through all the basics very professionally, and gave it 100%. Injuries are going to be their concern though as the season gets towards the business end.
Yes, we are a very fit squad, but I thought Widnes visibly tired towards the end of the first and mid way through the second. Plus they lost a couple of bodies and couldn't rotate.
Penny was really impressive in defence, particularly under the high ball and taking his man down. Jack Hughes looked exhausted in the second half. Will he get a rest on Monday and Philbin brought in? Russell tweeted that his ankle wasn't too bad at all but that he was going for a scan today, so we might get him back. Other than his knock-on in the second half I thought Atkins did well, his try showed great athleticism. I don't know if there are many of our players that could have scored that one.
Happy days as somebody has already posted. I dont think many people would have bet that we would be 10 points clear of Leeds with only a quarter of the season gone.

| True true WO.
I Couldn't go but have read a lot about the match here and on other forums.
Most reports including many posters on the Widnes sites give us credit and say the better side won, but clearly injuries before the game had a major effect, and then during the match with only 2 subs left Widnes were always going to tire.
But Wire can only play what is in front of them.
As I commented elsewhere, strength in depth seems to be even more important this year and honestly speaking I think we're one of the few sides who have that.
TS alluded to the fact that we may have a few more busted bodies than is known.
Will be very interesting to see this weeks 19.

| Although Ryan Atkins has had a lot of criticism (some of which has been deserved) over the last few seasons I thought today was his best game in years. Solid in defence and a superb try that, as already commented on, not many of our players would have scored.
Also think Ratcford deserves a special mention - he was brought on the first half to try and get some quicker play the balls and he achieved that and got us moving a bit quicker. It can't be easy for him Playing in three positions in one game but he did all three superbly showing just how important he is to the team - something that perhaps only dawned on me yesterday.
Smiths post match comments regarding widnes slowing us down at the play the ball within the rules that were applied to day was very telling. Thaler promoted a slow play the ball which widnes made the most of and we didn't. On another game widnes would have been on a team warning within the first 15 minutes (as would we have been in the first 10 of the 2nd half). Thaler missing the Russell foul for the first try and the forward pass for the second widnes try was very poor. Also his decision to penalise (an injured) ratchford for lying on was ridiculous - it took the two players 15 seconds to untangle themselves after the whistle was blown so how ratchford with a facial injury was supposed to disentangle himself is a mystery - compare that to an incident later in the game where a widnes man got stuck under chris hill and Thaler chose to (correctly) call time off to allow him to move. Minor point but annoyed me a lot.
Finally on the officiating - how did the touch judge miss lineham slipping into touch on the second half in the widnes 10? He even left a big boot mark on the touchline!
Also be interesting to see what others made of the Ah Van swinging arm that connected with Evans when he was already tackled? Looked a nasty one from where I was standing and Rhys didn't look impressed.
