The southern hemisphere RL game was a double header. Our record still stands I think 9A.
Perhaps the record may be any single football sporting event of any kind.
I'm not too sure. It ought to still be in the Guinness book of records if it still stands.
What is for sure, there's no chance of breaking that record here today.
More on course for our poorest attendance of competitive rugby this season. I think just slightly over 8K.

| My Dad and Grandad were there and Fax folk always say we were robbed by not having a perfect try awarded by the Ref, I dunno I was not even born then?
Remarkable though such a huge crowd, legend has it the road through Halifax was blocked all the way back over the Lancashire border, Halifax people walked to Odsal all 6 miles or so and back!

My late father was there and apparently didn't get in until half time. He also got home just in time to go to work the next morning.

Funny you should pop up, i've always wondered how fax fans look back at this game, not the result so much but being the other half of it. Obviously we only here our side and stories from our older folk, so its kinda nice to hear a story like the above.

Exactly the same memories my Father has told me many times, the coach must have got stuck in traffic miles away and just let the speccies off to walk the rest of the journey.
There is a good book describing the events of that day. There Were a Lot More Than That

Cheers Teesside, we have a copy in the family. The game has another story in my family in that my Mother took ill at the Wembley final, managed to get back to Warrington but has no memory for weeks after until one day in Warrington hospital she was awaken by a number of the players holding the cup. So it was quite emotional for her to be able to read about the game she missed.
b.t.w my mother and father didn't know each other in 54 so it was interesting for our family to hear both accounts of the famous game.

| My mother went with my uncle. When we scored she threw her bob hat into the air never to be seen again. I was not quite 1 at the time so, surprisingly, I don't remember much!!

Unfortunately, the picture posted by Buckley Street Wire is a fake. At the time, the Odsal terraces included at least two dead areas from which you couldn't see the pitch at all and that picture has been altered to make them look full. For a genuine photograph - although much poorer quality - see
i.rlfans.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=568739
Having said that, I have no doubt that the crowd was much bigger then the official figure of 102,569. I was there and I was amongst many thousands who simply walked in without paying

| Always wondered what the makeup of the crowd was. 50/50 split between Wire and Fax or was it more Fax? Anyone remember?
