For a club and its medical staff to allow a player to play on for a season needing an operation in the hope he would be anything more than a bit part player in a world cup because he wants to is without a doubt an abandonment of their duty of care.

As for other players I see that Greg Burke has gone out on loan, there's another one who has suffered from injuries since playing 20+ games as a prop in a season at a very early stage of development. Eamon O'Carroll is another.

If Wigan had no regard for player welfare McIlorum would have played in the GF.as he wanted to. Shaun Wane must have been tempted but was advised by the medics not to play him
