Warrington have beaten Wigan more times than any other team.

Until sometime around the early 1990s, Warrington had beaten Wigan at Central Park more times than they had beaten us.

I think that tells you who Warrington, over the years, regarded as the biggest rivals.

Why would Warrington not 'aspire' to be better than a club which has won the World Club Challenge like Widnes?

99% of Wire fans regard Wigan as their 'main rivals'.

But...

99% of Wigan fans regard St Helens as their 'main rivals'.

However...

If people outside the two clubs were asked who Warringtons 'main rivals' are and they would all say Widnes.

Losing to Whiffness at home last year was a kick in the nads but after a couple of days who cared? Where were they at the end of the year? All that matters is whoever happens to be the team to beat in any given season be it leeds, wigan or saints.

That said, I hope we kick the s**t out of the pies later.

I only ever lived in Warrington for three years of my life and I've only ever met two Widnes fans in my life. I don't really feel anything towards Widnes. No animosity nor hatred. I certainly don't like them and I want to beat them when we play them but only like I do Salford or Huddersfield.

For me it's a pick between Saints and Wigan. I'd probably say Wigan. But they have each other. But teams can have rivalries that aren't just their most local rival and more than one rival. Different fans can have different feelings of hatred towards a rival to someone else. I know fans of United in association football who hate City most but also know some who hate Liverpool most.

I don't know. Do we even have to have a biggest rival? You can't just make one up.

What I will say is that a close rival in the league table for a few years or a collection of finals against teams or even just a few memorable games with a team can spark a rivalry. Look at Chelsea and Leeds in association football again; they don't have a geographical rivalry, but they hate each other.

After this season, probably Leigh.
