In fairness to Rooney he has been saying he watches league for a while now. I remember in the 2007 RU World Cup when England got to the final after being expected to flop early on, Rooney being asked was he watching the rugby and he said he was watching the rugby league playoffs instead. On his twitter he has posted stuff about league and retweeted league things so its fair to say he does follow it.
Nick Barmby is the main league fan out of footballers though, huge Hull FC fan.

i said at the time that the warrington wolves players showed great sportsmanship by staying on the field to see the rhinos lift the cup,we have seen saints players well gone by that point in previous gf's
they say that you have to lose one to know how to win one,so maybe the pain of watching the rhinos lift the cup could be the spur to see wire do the same perhaps? |
