| I think a John Wells staight man Brian Carney funny guy could work. They both know what they are talking about, both have modern banter and it might stop me having to put up with Wells shouting at me at half time. Inside voice John would be a lot better.
As for Clarkey, I will probably be lambasted for this, but he's a character, he's a fan of the game, you hear it when he makes his silly squeals and shouts. I think this impulse would stop him from bagging a commentary job, put give him time to prepare and he'd present the facts and stats quite well.
For me. Wells is the new Eddie, Carney the new Stevo and give Clarke Wells' job, pre, half and post match summeriser. And he doesn't have to shout at us from the pitch either, add a touch of professionalism to it.

| Quote: Teessidewire "I must be ill, I find myself agreeing with you. The commentary has changed this season, instead of talking about the play there seems to be too much emphasis on referees decisions. I know you won't agree with me, but Phil Clarke should not be on when Wigan are playing, the bias shows through so much.'"
I do agree with you about Clarkey, but on the flip side he does seem to like Wire and the way they play. I like the way Clarke summarises though, he has a great knowledge of the game. Stevo on the other hand has no idea about the modern game and when he gets into a little arguement about anything technical with either Clarke or Carney he tends to get shown up. What is even more embarrassing is when he goes on Sky Sports News giving it the whole "its the greatest game" stuff and shouting at the camera, change the record Stevo, your boring and nobody likes you.

He needs to get rid of the margin metre, or whatever it's called. At one time it was predicting a 30 point win for Wigan and there was never a chance of that. Applied to RU, where territory is everything and forcing penalties is looked upon as a major victory it would work, but not in RL.

The margin meter is cringeworthy and far too "American" although I dont think Clarke is 100% to blame, he must have been told to create something like this from Sky and got the go ahead from them.

The margin meter is something that could potentially work, but RL is completely the wrong sport to use it in. In a game like basketball, where statistics can be compiled on things like +/-, per 100 possessions and pace, they could use something to potentially guess a possible score through averages developed during an 82 game season. But RL is <30 game season, sides only meat each other twice and there are far too many players involved to try and develop statistical performance when squads vary week on week.
They should just scrap the margin meter and go for a Soccer Saturday-esque prediction at the start from the pundits, then bring it up at the end to see who was closest.

| Can't stand Hemmings to be honest, its nothing personal but he's too politically correct with his opinions, when a few handbags at dawn scuffles break out his comments are cringeworthy, "we don't need that in our game". Wake up fella, its virtually a full contact sport these days with plenty of adrenelin and testosterone flowing, Eddie comes across as an out dated company man.

| A very sad sign of things to come when posters cannot think for themselves.
ditch Sky and watch on the internet in Polish or Norwegian.

Dave Woods loves RL, no doubt, but he is not a good commentator.

| I'm going to stick up for Eddie.
The primary job he's there to do is desrcibe the action as it happens. The way he goes about that combined with his tone and voice is very good. He does add drama to it. Watch a game commentated by Bill Arthur and he practically puts you to sleep.
The problem has arisen by the presence of Stevo, who, let's face it, knows very little about a sport he's supposed to be an expert in. Eddie feels comfotable to offer opinions on a subject that clueless stevo has mentored him in and it leads you down cringeworthy paths.
Get rid of Stevo, keep Eddie to commentate and have the other, younger lads on to analyse what's going on.

| Super League on Sky is great. They have brought in "All The Tries" recently, which was needed; "Boots'N'All" is a very good programme, "Super Men" has been a good show and is better now it's an hour. ("NRL Full Time" is an hour long in Aus though and is cut to ribbons to make it <30mins on Sky which makes it quite unfulfilling!).
However, it's got quite a few things wrong with it when the live games are on.
The insistance Sky have in showing replays of f?ck all while the game is going on is infuriating. In the opening minutes of the Pie-Wire game on Friday there was a slow-motion replay of two ugly birds in the crowd jumping up in the act of celebrating something that ended up not being a try (therefore it was an utterly pointless replay to show); this was whilst the game was going on and on the audio the crowd roared and Stevo went "ooah look at that" - well i couldn't look at it because of the stupid replay. Or there will be a suspicion of a knock-on at the ptb on tackle one and during tackles two or three there will be a replay of this incident and again there will be a huge roar from the crowd as Roby (for example) is breaking twenty metres up-field - yet we miss that as we see yet another replay. It happens a dozen times a game, at least!
The commentary is quite frankly ridiuclous at times.
The things Stevo comes out with are laughable "they realise the blind side is open here and will utilize it on this play" - it doesn't happen. And the "banter" between Eddie and Stevo is not funny and hasn't been for ten years. He's a complete dinosaur when it comes to his opinions too. Is he past the age of retirement? because he needs to retire now!
Phil Clarke needs to be left at home when Wigan are on. Other than that he's okay[-ish].
Then there's Eddie (point of the thread). Eddie only talks about the negative in everything. Anyting that happens he questions in the negative light. It's not good to hear (ironic as i'm doing that right now!). And he still goes on about rules that came in years ago as if they're a new thing and are still contentious. I still don't think he can get his head around the momentum rule, everytime it's like it's the first time he's ever heard of it. Then during the Saints-Leeds game on Sunday, what he said to Brian Carney was out of order.
There are people there who work for Super League on Sky who are all capable of doing the whole thing without Eddie and Stevo now. They were good for a time but that time is up.

| Actually, I think the critics and the defenders of SKY are being too simplistic. The real problem - ironically, given they are always crying out for it - is a lack of consistency. At times, the coverage is superb and they get it spot on. To say Eddie and Stevo don't know the game well enough is farcical given how many games they watch! But at times they do come out with absolute nonsense. A very simple example was when Briers found touch from kickoff on Friday. Eddie seemed astonished Lee had kicked it instead of Hodgson - how could he not know Lee takes nearly all the kickoffs?!
