| The analogy with the cricket is a poor one.
The ones currently playing for England DO have English credentials, e.g. born in England or have an English parent.
The Rangi Chase issue is so wide of the mark, it's untrue. As far as I'm aware, he has no English parents, wasn't born here, so what's he done to warrant being English....enjoyed Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding, washed down with a pint of real ale, in a traditional English pub on a Sunday afternoon....as far as I'm concerned, they're his qualifying credentials...unbelievable.
It's just as bad as the farce with Fa'asavlu (sp) a few years back.
Have we no scruples in our game anymore?
Last one out, turn the lights off.
Oh, andnow we have another player that limbos under the player quota for next season, so guess what, Cas go out and get ANOTHER foreigner, to the detriment of their youth set-up. Potentially another youngster lost to our game, just because Cas CAN get another player. No wonder fans of other sports laugh at our game....we give them enough bait

This is what his opinion was a couple of months ago
It's easy to mock, but it's modern sport. I just get the feeling he got the 'no' from New Zealand after pushing for a spot in their squad and that he's doing it out of spite against NZ rather than actually wanting to play for England.

| what about jack reed, he left the country when he was 2 but can play for england and probably never even touched a rugby ball in this country. Rangi chase has qualified to play for england because of residency. why are people complaining that we have got a star player in the england side. the english are never happy, we all complain that we are rubbish when we lose but when we have a chance of winning we still complain because someone doesnt have an english accent

Haalf of the cas squad is made up of youngsters, the majority of cas fans are crying out for more experienced players to be in the squad. and we only have 3 quota players.
how does RL give bait for fans of other sports, how many foreigners play for english clubs in football?

| I think it's great that guys from a small colonial island the other side of the world through their hard work can earn on merit the chance to play for the motherland and sing the national anthem of Her Majesty their Queen.
Over in New Zealand rugby is part of the fabric of their society, there isn't a boy in NZ that doesn't one day dream of pulling on that hallowed white jersey like Henry Paul, Vainikolo and now Shontayne Hape have done, so why shouldn't Rangi be allowed to fulfil that dream.
After all we embraced the Irishman Chris Bridge into the England team.

Can't agree at all? Who was the last England coach? Under the current rules, if he qualifies then I'm happy. We are doing no different to what Australia and NZ have done for years. Best example is Brad Thorne, NZ born, plays RL for Aus, RU for All Blacks, back to RL (did he play for Aus again in that period?), then a second spell with the All Blacks. Lote Tuquiri played RL in a World Cup for Fiji, then RL and RU for Aus. There are numerous Fijians and Samoans who have played for both Aus and NZ. What's the difference?
As for Cas depriving another local lad of a place in the squad, I'll bet no other club has a better record than Castleford over the past 10 years at promoting local lads. If it was HKR (currently 10 overseas players), then I'd agree with you.

| Teesside, just because others (nations, clubs) do it, doesn't make it right.
SLTiger1...there are umpteen foreign players playing in the Premiership (football) because there is no restriction on foreign players....there is in RL, allthough it's policed pathetically, due to so many opt-out clauses..
The fact that Chase plays for Cas is irrelevant, it could be any club that this issue affects, that's why I raised the issue, not a sympathy vote for Cas. I'm objecting to the principle.

| I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying that it's in the rules, so why not take advantage? I'm afraid that we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

| Unfortunately (right or wrong) it makes the sport a bit of a joke to outsiders!
Fact is, their are only 2 teams challenging in the international arena and that is NZ and Aus.
Allowing England to play players from Aus or NZ will (in the eyes of the powers that be) hopefully allow England to challenge them two.
It is a quick fix solution though that is to the detriment of the sport both in the fact that young English players miss out and that to non RL fans watching the games we look a bit of a joke.

This is what his opinion was a couple of months agoThe bridge between the country you were born and the country you represent in sport was broken many years ago by all team sports, Rangi will still be on the overseas quota and he will still have a New Zealand passport.
If you read all of that interview he Talks about how this country gave him a second chance and how much he loves it here and that realistically if he wants to play for New Zealand he would have to leave superleague and play in the NRL against his peers.
He had offers recently to re-join a NRL club aswell as a big offer from a rugby union club and represent England.
He turned them both down to stay in SuperLeague with Cas the place he calls home (he will be 30 years old when contract ends) and the chance to play rep football for England.

Not the case, RU simply accept it because all the home nations have been doing it for years.

| I've no probs disagreeing with you Teesside, we agree on many issues.
It's all this "it's in the rules" business (that everyone including ourselves, bend to suit themselves) that irks me.
If a club is allowed to have 5 overseas players per season, that's all it should be, not 5 PLUS someone who's been here for 6 seasons, someone who's got a Scottish granny, someone who has Polish ancestory (i.e.European restriction of trade). To me, this stinks...and we (Warrington) do it as much as the next club.
No wonder we've not won a Test series in my lifetime v Australia, if our domestic sides are "chockablock full" of over the hill/not good enough Australians.
This is only my opinion, but, if we want to compete with the Aussies, we seriously need to limit the amount of players coming over to our shores, taking up squad places, and taking back a wheelbarrow full of doshback home, after a couple of years, in the process.
We must lose plenty of U20'S who get disillusioned with the game, after being shoved down the pecking order, to accomodate a late 20's Aussie underachiever, simply because the club has an untaken overseas spot to fill. They don't all get snapped up by other clubs. There are such things as late developers in RL. Kevin Ward, anyone.
To think, we may have lost Gaz Carvell to this (luckily, we didn't). He was hardly outstanding in his early years at Leeds/Hull, but, his game has improved no end, in the last 2 years. If he hadn't 'stuck at it', he could easily have thought.."#### it, here's another Aussie coming to take my place, #### RL, I'll go and do something else"

| Good post Lefty. Although we disagree on the Chase situation, we certainly appear to agree on the Overseas players rules. You're also right about Gaz Carvell. I watched him in Gateshead's SL season and at 19-20 he wasn't a lot to write home about. I'd say he only came into his best form at 29, a long apprenticeship. Although I believe that we should take advantage of the rules as they are, I also believe that each club should have no more than 5 overseas players full stop. It currently isn't worth HKR fielding an U20 team, they've got 10 overseas players with possibly 1 more to come.
