If only we realised Cull wasnt up to the job in 2005 and we needed a proven winner.'"
Well as you will remember, you and me were banging this drum for a long time (it took me till mid 2006 to give up on Cull) but with hindsight we probably had to go through the extra years of Cullen and then Lowes in order to be in the right place at the right time to get Smith. Smith would never have left Leeds in 2005, and he obviously had his ambitions to coach internationally so we couldn't have got him before we did.
I always wanted us to get Hanley, Lang or Graham Murray but would we have won these trophies with them? I'm not sure. I think we would have got improvement but not sure if we'd have gone all the way and any of those guys could have been 2 years in the job and then got tired and quit. So I'm glad things worked out the way they did.

Don't forget the Wire FM trophy/ James Edwards Land Rover Challenge, thats something thats eluded Michael Maguire, its gonna really bug him returning to Australia without winning one.

| Give him the keys to the Golden gates..in fact give him the Golden gates.
Best coach since Murphy.. and in the top 5 of all time...with the potential to be the best ever.
God save the Smithy!..Long live the Smithy! [repeat x3]

| tony smith (che) has been the best signing we have ever made. i'm a bit ed now but would like to say that we have a coach
who is responsible for the best attack and best defence in the league and cares for the quality of rl and most importantly
for our club. The biggest signing again for any sl side would be for us to extend ts's contract.

| Very good coach who has shown repeatedly he knows how to make a side champions, one of only two England based head-coaches I would have taken at Wigan.

Apart from being wrong (it's 3 each) the telling difference for me is that all fans, Wire and neutral, love the entertaining, expansive rugby that Warrington play. Nobody except Wigan fans (and probably not all of them) like the way Wigan play.

| Top bloke, super coach.
Always waits by the tunnel to shake the hand of every opposition player at the end of a game
A gentleman who is not prepared to win at all costs and won't play injured players

smith was the perfect man at the perfect time, just like at leeds in 2004.

Indeed! And Wire and neutral fans all have a lot of time for Tony as he's a really nice bloke and comes across as just that. Do we all think that about Maguire when he condones his players for ill-play? This would make a difference in any walk of life, not just rugby. And yes, it is 3 trophies each.

I think you all missed the important bit that he said, 'in less time'. Maguire has been at Wigan 2 years (2010 - ) and won 2 cups, Smith has been with you (2009 - ) 3 years and won 3 cups.
As for the sly dig, I can't say I enjoy watching wire play, just like I don't enjoy watching saints play or leeds.

| Maguire and Smith are the best two coaches in Super League by a country mile, and any other club would swap their current coach for either of them in a heartbeat if they were given the chance.
There really isn't any need for tit for tat arguments about them. They're both outstanding.

Your point being what?
You don't like expansive rugby, or you don't like watching rivals play?
Out of interest apart from Wigan, who do you like watching ?

| A decent coach is what we have been lacking for many years, the final missing piece of the jigsaw like a previous poster has put we need to sign him on a loooongggg contract. It worries me that he may well move on if/when we win the Gf thinking job done and look for a "new challenge"
