| The 80s were dark days indeed for rock and metal. Utter rubbish with the hair metal outfits until GNR came and showed you could still rock hard and be popular.

My personal favourites - Adam and the Ants, Police, Style Council to name just 3..'"
All three of which were really late 70s artists who re-emerged or developed in the 80s.

| The 80's what a load of cr@p.
60's was when we had real music, Stones, Small Faces, Spencer Davies etc.

I think U2, one of the most successful bands in the history of music will disagree with you.

| I think when you look back at an era gone by, you remember the bands who had lasting appeal (hence why you remember them) and forget about the throwaway pop bands that existed at the time.
Someone earlier mentioned N-Dubz and Chipmunks. Do you honestly think they'll be remembered in 20 years time when people look back?
Every era has had good bands and on the trail of them good bands are crap bands with less talent but manufactured to have instant appeal and shift lots of units over a short period of time.
I think your favourite era is whatever you are into in your teens.
That is how it was for me anyway.
I like lots of stuff that comes out these days (not chart stuff) but because I have less time to listen to it and the fact I get a lot more music nowadays (thanks to downloading), I listen to an album, enjoy it and then move on to the next one.
Back in the early 90's when I was a teenager, I was a massive Guns N Roses fan and still to this day know every single lyric to every song on all of their albums.
I don't think I know the lyrics to any songs that I like these days.

Good choice re Genesis MKC. Never really got Yes (apart from the Yes Album).
Slightly o/t re Rock Band on a Saturday Night. Old Slap 'ead Collins must win best drummer (with Moon a close second). Always thought Bonzo Bonham was a bit over rated. There's more to drumming than smacking them as hard as you can. Cue the Zep fans backlash

No finer drummer than PC in my book. Soured his fine reputation with his slushy solo stuff imo but Genesis live with him and Chester Thompson were fantastic. Was lucky enough to see them when Steve Hackett was still with them (77) their finest hour for me.

You lucky ......, MKC. My first gig of their's was '82 (I was 13). The tour you mention is now my new Avatar. It's still (imo) the best live album of all time. Agree with your Collins comments (although his first 3 albums had some tracks on, which are fantastic), he's known to the majority of people as a balladeer - shame really.
With regards to the poll for best drummer, I'm shaking my head as to why there's no Neil Peart (known as the drummers drummer). Mind you, if you look at the judges, we have such informed people as Johnathon Ross to thank for that.

Did Bill Bruford or get a mention in the drummers poll? He and PC have always been the best of them imo.
Brufords solo albums from late seventies/early eighties were stunning. Just noticed you've changed Duke to Seconds Out - fantastic album which became the benchmark for live albums for years to come. Even now I've not heard one to even come close. Someone on here has got Wind and Wuthering as their avatar so it looks like we aren't the only ones to still appreciate Britains finest proggers. Which band did Neil Peart play in? Know the name but can't remember the band.

correct Adam and the Antz produced some of their best stuff in 1979 Car trouble and Zerox were a couple of their finest songs sadly after 1981 it went rapidly down hill ...Stand and deliver while a favourite of mine and a good enough song started him (Adam ant) on the way to the selling of his soul....
and when they released Prince Charming which was awful (a rip off of a rolf Harris "classic"...!!! ) the end was nigh
it did however go straight to number one but the death knell had been sounded in my opinion, then we had to endure stuff like Ant Rap and Puss in boots .....so sad....
I have a vivid memory from around 1978/79 of being dragged round Chester by my mum to do some shopping, and I saw my first proper punks, chains, big mohicans, the works they were quite scary at the time, and I saw one with "adam and the antz" studded into the back of his leather jacket, i remember thinking that must be a cool band, I bet a couple of years later that punk had re arranged the studs to make a different bands name....

yeah they are a group of young kids making a band but they arent my cup of tea, and so far removed from What Stuart Adamson was its untrue...
The Kooks may have been a better example for you.
