The fairytale story of Jenson Button to become World Champion despite twelve months ago having no team and staring unemployment in the face.

| I'm not a United fan, but I have to say that Giggs was as worthy a winner of the award as any of the other contenders...My only query is to why this year has been deemed so special over any other??
Personally, I would have gone for David Haye .... But it is quite sad how far Boxing has slipped in the public's opinion, that we produce a Heavyweight Champion and he fails to even make the top 3....20 years ago Bruno would have been a runaway winner if he'd took the title then (he'd probably have been knighted too!!).

| Quote: Richeastender "What has Giggs achieved? Deciding he was Welsh was his first mistake. If he had ambition to play World Cup football he would have plumped for England, his country of birth. "personality"? I think not.
I use to really look forward to Sports Personality of the year so that I could watch all the best bits of sport from the year. But now BBC has so little live sport, it isn't worth watching'"
How long has Cardiff been in England?

....'Staring unemployment in the face'...????... ......I don't think things were that drastic for the already-a-millionaire racing driver.
I'm not a fan of F1 either, but according to my friends who are, they tell me that Button is the worst World Champion in living memory????

| "Deciding he was Welsh"? I think once you're born in Cardiff that's pretty much already decided is it not?
I wanted David Haye to win it but I didn't expect him to. Far too much boxing is on pay per view now for the general sporting public to see the biggest fights live and take a genuine interest.

| Giggs was not a worthy winner,it was a total farce. If the bbc wanted to honour Giggs then the lifetime achievement award would have been more suited.

| Cavendish deserved to win it IMO. His achievements this past year have been incredible.

| Giggs has achieved a hell of a lot in football through his career at Man U and deserves some kind of recognition, but i thought it was sports personality of the YEAR?...
For most of last season he was a bit part sub scoring 2 goals (i stand to be corrected on this CBA looking it up) he was far from integral in Man Utd's title win...And was part of a losing champions league side...

Behave yourself .
Fair enough, he won the Milan-San Remo but he finished 131st in the Tour de France
If you're going to big up a cyclist it should be Bradley Wiggins

| Wasn't Giggs eligible for England having been brought up (I always though born in, but apparently not) in Salford/Manchester, as his dad moved up north to play for Swinton?
Anyway, I can't think of a more worthy winner of an award. The bloke should go down as one of the finest footballers ever and a great person, too, by all accounts.

Possibly but in my opinion IF he was eligible (I don't know for certain either way) then choosing to play for the country of his birth rather than flying the flag of convenience is another feather in Giggs' cap.
Had he played for England then aside from any footballing benefits he also would have no doubt made a lot more money as he would have been an even bigger draw for sponsors. The fact that he put loyalty to his heritage first should be applauded not denigrated. Presumably Richeastender is the type of "Ingurlund Till I Die" merchant who is bitter towards Giggs because England's left wing has been bereft of talent for the majority of his career.
I hate Man United. I don't hate Ryan Giggs. That's pretty much the highest accolade I can pay him! I still would have voted for David Haye had I been in when SPOTY was on though.
