Currently, I'm not Fat!:14942.jpg

I use the M62 every single working day about 7am and I am never able to get above 40mph. With these roads works which will last until March 2010 the journey will be even worse.

It actually shouldn't be, because the limit will be 50, which you never reach anyway, so you shouldn't be able to spot a difference... icon_lol.gif

With the majority of my work being around the Manchester area, those road works WILL reduce me to tears at some point, i'm sure of it. The whole year to do them, and they decide to do them over christmas....outside the Trafford Centre.....brilliant, a planning masterpiece.

Would you apply the same sort of taxation on fuel to lorries? (seen as the UK haulage industry is taxed to death presently)

Interesting that you say that the haulage industry is being taxed to death??....From my experience on the motorways (and I spend nearly everyday on various 1's throughout the country), I would say that there has never been a time when there has been more lorries on the road, both British & foreign, and for the most part it is this volume of lorries that actually slows down the transport network.

So personally, driving a few of these HGV's off the road would only be a good thing for me....If high taxation also stops selfish parents taking kids everywhere by car as well, then that's even better.

Overall there are less lorries on the road as hauliers are hit by the recession & lorry drivers are finding it increasingly difficult to find work.

Also if you 'drive lorries off the road' as you put it watch the supermarket shelves start emptying.

I would charge lorries an additional licence fee to use motorways outside of the hours from 9.00pm to 6.00am.

There would then be an additional charge for wagons to use anything other than the inside lane.

Whenever traffic slows on a motorway there is always a wagon in the second lane over-taking a wagon in the inside lane. The problems are then heightened as this often tempts women drivers to venture into the outside lane.

Sorry, there are more lorries than ever blocking the roads and as for the supermarket shelves??....Do you not honestly think that ASDA and their ilk will simply have their own private fleets??

I don't know where you get your information from at all fella as I have friends in this industry scratching around for work that isn't there. I know of three haulage companies (2 in Yorkshire, one in Warrington) that have gone to the wall in the last year. ASDA & their ilk do have their private fleets albeit some of the big four supermarkets do sub-contract their haulage & distribution to DHL, Stobart, Wincanton etc etc.

The 50 mph limit on the M62 and the M6 between Winwick and Haydock is not a limit as such, more of an ambition.
The queue on the M6 north bound to access the M62 to Manchester is caused mainly by ignorant drivers who refuse to join that queue and then block the M6 lane when they find they can't get into the queue further down.
They should be booked for obstruction!

I get my information from driving on the motorways everyday.

Its a saturation of lorries that has drove businesses under, not any tax hike.

As for the supermarkets, you just stated the shelves would be empty, then admit to them having their own arrangements???....So they actually won't be empty???... icon_confused.gif

On your first paragraph I ask why do you want a major tax hike in fuel prices seen as you do so much motorway driving? I would have thought you'd be the first to campaign for a drop in fuel taxes.

As for your second paragraph try checking how much it costs to own & operate an articulated lorry. Let me tell you also that I collected from one of the aforementioned hauliers who have gone bust the other Friday, it's a mix of the recession & the fact that Britain has some of the highest fuel taxes in the western world.

As for your third paragraph no supermarkets don't have their own arrangements. A third party haulier will come into a regional distribution centre & deliver on behalf of their own customer, lorries are a vital part of the supply chain whether owned by one of the big four supermarkets or not.

Quote: The Angry Pirate "That's optimistic...apart from at weekends, reaching 50 either way on that particular stretch is very rare.

The main problem with the whole J10-J12 stretch of the M62 is that there is simply not enough road for the volume of traffic that uses it...A definite contender for road widening in the near future.

P.S. One more gripe....Why do fat, lazy parents insist on having to drive their precious children everywhere, thus creating gridlock at various stages of the day, throughout the town??

GET THE LAZY B******S WALKING!!....
I walked to school every single day as a kid...It annoys me when i see gridlock around schools because of the shear volume of traffic...

Not only do they clog the road up making it dangerous for the kids that do walk to cross due to having to cross between parked cars...
Most of them insist on dropping them off right outside the bloody gates sometimes stopping in the middle of the road with they're hazards on... icon_rolleyes.gif

1. I do not neccessarily want a hike in fuel taxes. However, I do disagree massively with the Haulage industries claims that it is the tax issue that is driving them under....As I have pointed out, in my opinion, a massive saturation of competitors in the industry is more likely to blame for any company's downfall.

2. Dream on. The supermarkets are the most powerful player in British industry today. Full stop. The demise of a few small haulage firms will not affect them one little bit. They practically run their own farms, producing their own goods, so putting together a transport system to service their needs is small fry.
