Serious question for the Wiganers - why do you always refer to your players by their first names? It's all "Sam", "Tommy", "Josh" "Laughable Matty". Why not Tomkins, Leulai, Charnley and Smith?

I don't or at least, I try not to. I certainly would never refer to Carvell as Gaz - never met the bloke and it's a bit too familiar for me. All this "Sam", "Josh" and "Laughable Matty" stuff is cringeworthy for me.
Slight tangent, but a few years I go I saw Chris Boardman at a sporting event in Manchester. Had my picture taken with him and referred to him as Mr Boardman. Said he hadn't been called Mr Boardman since school. If I knew then what I know now, I'd have asked him for discount on one of his bikes. |
