| A large number of he current squad have enjoyed success with Wires, and Smith has been a massive factor in that, Equally, some of the younger players have developed under his tutorship.
So, I find it hard to believe that these players no longer respect, or have faith in him, his tactics and skills as a coach and as a man.
What I do believe is a significant factor, is that Smith is gradually, and in a phased, deliberate way reducing his involvement in day-to-day coaching activities and relinquishing these duties to Agar - a coach who I suspect has yet to convince anyone, players or fans, Wires and otherwise of his abilities.
Having said that, I think our recruitment over the last few years has been very poor and suggests someone isn't doing their homework. This combined with several stalwarts of the team (notably Monas, Atkins, Bridge, Westwood) beginning a simultaneous, inevitable downward-trajectory due to their age has led to a sudden dilution in quality of the squad, most notably in the backs.
The one glaring source of optimism in the current setup is Ratchford. We need to build a team around him, play him where we will have his hands on the ball most and stop, please, stop playing players out of position because their face fits, even if their form does not warrant it.

| Excellent post morrisey. Smith leaving things to agar is how I see it. What annoys me is that we threw away a perfect opportunity in keeping monas and his brains at the club to get smiths hopeless mate in, and surely his presence alone would have kept Joel happy in his rugby. We've planned very badly and as much as it pains me it all has to knock on smith's door. We have already wasted a huge chance to form a dynasty (no GF wins) I can see this dragging on to force us out of contention for a while

| Can we just for once get some honesty from Smith, i don't care if it hurts the teams feelings, i know there are all sport psychology reasons for not doing but now it's insulting.
Tell us it's dross, tell us some of the ways you're going to rectify it and show us that you f'kn care about the fans and stop insulting our intelligence.

the recruitment from the NRL has been nothing short of gross misconduct over the last few years..... these should be the players driving us forward and making us the difference..... unfortunately they have been the hindrance.'"
As I said at the start of the year when you signed Simms, and I got plenty of negative feedback from a lot of wire fans; Simms = Average NRL journeyman. Doesn't mean to say he can't do a job and be solid. He will never be a superstar, but won't be on average money, he could have stayed in Aus for that. For what he offers I recon you could have picked up one of a few domestic players who would have done as good of a job on much less cap.
Asotasi & Simms will be a lot of cap for a small amount of on field return. I would take Scruton & Bailey over those two any day of the week( I recon on a lot less cash). Giving you more options to bring in a top class half?

| After a poor night, we seem to have started like last year, inconsistent ,players lose of form in backs, all at same time,I hate to put a label on one game but cas on Monday at home is looking pretty important,
We got turned over by wakey at home last year, so that games not a given, we then have Wigan , Leeds away, we need to roll sleeves up work hard and get back on track or this season will be over by end of May,,

Which, if true, suggests Smith has lost interest in the job, and would make one wonder what our 'Head of Coaching and Rugby' is being paid for.

As I've commented on previous threads about smith, as good as he is I feel he's been here long enough the team needs a fresh input, new ideas, change methods , freshen thing up, although not many candidates about at the moment to provide a new input.

| Rubber duckie I think you have got it wrong ken Kelly was not the last man of steel in the p and b, Jonathan Davies held the honour in 1993-1994 season while at the wire.

| I can take Smiths point about all the penalties and Westwoods sinbin not helping, but you have to ask why that happens. For me it happens because we are not in control of the game or ball, and concede the pens in frustration trying to attain that control.
We haven't got the players to give us that game control.
