Oh deary me. I could not believe that. Of all the things going on in the game, of the three very short paragraphs detailing the "Strategic Review" one paragraph was dedicated to a Haighs Pie and Peas lunch. FFS. We are doomed. Thankfully I'd guess that "Fishtank" (who wrote the small blog) has no influence. He might know a bit about Haigh's Pies & Peas though and obviously supports the "Pink Weekend". |

I would need to know a lot more details about what the NRL is actually proposing before deciding whether or not it is a good thing. They talk about the NRL having "complete administrative control" over Super League, but what would that entail, exactly? A 10-team league (which feels to me like a backwards step, and less interesting) is nothing more than a restructure - same old, same old. But in what other ways would "complete administrative control" manifest itself? What are they actually proposing to do differently? Until I know more about those details, I am left seeing red flags when I hear the phrase "complete administrative control". Perhaps that's because I'm a cynical old so-and-so who knows that proposals like this tend to mostly benefit those in control rather than those down the food chain. I know things aren't great at the moment, and it's tempting to believe that anything's better than the RFL, but when you are in such a weak and vulnerable position, that's when you get vultures circling.

The problems with our game go far deeper than this though. At it's heart is the offering on the pitch just isn't as dynamic and exciting as it was, even 15 years ago. The gladiatorial contest has gone, the aggression has gone and with it the biff (which we all liked). But the honesty has gone too. Feigning injury, gamesmanship, robotic, predictable plays and the absolute pantomime pile on that is the ruck/play the ball with players looking round to see how long they can hold a player down and invent news ways of tangling legs and arms to obstruct play. Arms thrown in the air in fake protestation. Put simply - it's boring. Then the coverage - relegated to the digital channel back waters the game constantly makes a laughing stock of itself, almost a parody. Dim witted Northerners with dreadful elocution all within a context of one big joke - the televised draw for the CC 1/4 final being a good example. Commentators from the womens's game are just not credible, a self congratulatory attempt at DEI, at the expense of being even vaguely capable sports commentators bringing the game alive for the viewers. The public image of the game looks so low rent. I don't know of any other sport that performs as poorly in front of the cameras. Then we have the woeful refereeing standards and rules. That tackle by Palasia last night would have been straight red last season - no debate, shoulder to the head with force and intent. The rules are all over the place. |

To state the bleedin' obvious the problem is our funding. No sport can flourish today without income from TV. Sky money has kept Super League Clubs since Super League began but the massive reduction could be terminal for some clubs who wish to remain full time.
I'm not so sure the game is much different as there used to be crap games in the past that we tend to forget about and we only saw a small percentage of the matches that we do now. Obviously we miss the biff & the bash but realistically we knew that it couldn't continue as soon as ex-players started litigation.
Sky has built us up & knocked us down. It's going to be tough & I worry what we are going to do next.

The custodians of the game in the UK (RFL, Superleague, club owners) have allowed/created the circumstances where Sky has no competition or incentive to increase or even maintain what they pay for the broadcast rights and the funding has slumped. That is not Sky's fault (they will rightly pay the bare minimum they can get away with) that is the fault of the UK RL leadership through poor leadership, detrimental rule changes, multiple failed expansion attempts, bailouts, vanity projects and self interested short sightedness. We have had a stagnant salary cap that has stopped wealthy clubs from signing top talent, whilst simultaneously fail to stop clubs go to the wall. We have the diversity of league champions almost as bad as Scottish football, and a civil war between the amateur and pro game that has gone on for decades. The biff / litigation argument is balls too. I see multi million dollar sports on the TV where people knock seven shades of sh yte out of each other, some of these sports have an entire raison d'etre to inflict brain and physical injury on an opponent. Seemingly their governing bodies have better lawyers. In closing, I believe the game is very different to how it was. Even comparing the "peak" SL era 2000-2007 to now, it's way behind in terms of flair and excitement. Think back to the Braford and Saints teams of that era. There was no feigning injury back then for sure. I'm also sure that the vast majority of posters on this forum who have watched RL from the birth of SL to now believe the game was more compelling to watch previously compared to now. |

I'm afraid why a few nutters (like myself) from the north love rugby league is a mystery to the the majority of the UK. We have been trying to exist/expand since 1875 and it does seem an uphill battle. Our custodians of the game ,have got a bit of a job. Anyone who puts their hand up to run a club deserves a medal. If the right man is out there, to move our sport forward, may we see him now and good luck to him.

There is too little variety in the game these days , i much preferred the days of just one division when different teams came to town. Any more reduction in SL numbers will imo be an even bigger turn off & further marginalise the game . No wonder attendances at showpiece events are dwindling when just 12 clubs are realistically in with a shout.

Not quite - RL was thriving in the 1950s. 40k+ attendances for the Lancashire Cup, 100K+ for Challenge Cups. Take 1951 for example. 31 teams in the league with Cardiff and Liverpool represented. Times were different then but it wasn't a struggle to exist. SL started off well full of hope and optimism. We had 4 big teams that shared out the honours, some top players on show, bags of money from Sky, a dedicated RL show then it sort of dwindled in quality from about 2007 onwards and is currently in it's death throes as Batley talk about pies and peas and we make videos of Myler's shoulder pads. If I had no affiliation to Warrington or the NW I wouldn't be watching. |

I hope there is some news in the not to distant future. |
