Bill McLaren was once commentating when Bob Hesford was playing in an England RU International - mentioned how the Hesfords were a sporting family because not only did Bob play for RU for England but brother Iain also played in goal for Sunderland - he declined to make any mention of the sporting exploits of the other brother Steve - wonder why ?.

Superb goal kicker, best of his time. He had the unusual style of a place kick for touch also.
Having a player with his kicking ability was worth the two points when we had a penalty in our own half, and with a try worth only 3 points a goal was easy points.

Remember on loads of occasions Phil Ford collecting the ball and sprinting to half way for Steve to kick it dead down the other end. Worked so may times for us. He must have been the best kicker British RL has ever seen imo. Anyone remember him wacking Graham West as he trotted back from a conversion. Ref and touchies never saw it and Hes got away scot free.
