I've defended Price time and time again as we've played some absolutely amazing rugby under him. But i've had enough myself now and unless there is a dramatic turn a round in the next 2 games i'll finally be jumping on the Price out bandwagon.
Either he has no clue on how to fix us or he doesn't have the balls to drop players, or the players don't respect him and think their places are set in stone.
Wane would be perfect for this club and i genuinely think he would turn us in to a monster of a club. He wouldn't take from players or fitzpatrick and would drop anyone not playing well and would turn the culture of the club around.
But i can't see him taking on a club AND being England coach as he wants to give 100% to England from the look of it. But he would be perfect for us.

My hope is that he realises he only gets to coach a few games a year at national level and is twiddling his thumbs around the time we decide to actually look for a decent coach.

Quote: morleys_deckchair "i agree with some of that list, but in modern society, its going to be near impossible to implement anything like that.

We need a coach that inspires, more than one that intimidates.'"

I agree with duckie's list too, I think you can have high standards without being a bully. But yes it is harder now because of modern society.

The big change is social media, and the relative ease of achieving 'celebrity' status. In the old days, a young player would be a relative nobody, unless they'd made it as an established first teamer. Today just having the status of a professional sportsman, with a good physique, few tattoos and some selfies tweaked with artistic filters on instagram and some motivational quotes, is going to guarantee that a guy is a superstar among his peers. It doesn't matter how much the player has achieved in the game. He will have tons of followers and female attention, most of the public aren't RL fans and so they don't know who is good and who isn't. This makes young players much more narcissistic and cocky, and probably erodes some of the desire to make themselves great, as the easy route is to live through social media and cultivate their following.

Also stuff like facebook, twitter and this forum, allows a route for players' grievances to come out 'anonymously' against a coach who tries to impose discipline on them that they don't like. Even if they aren't spreading it themselves, they moan to family and friends, and stuff gets out online. Remember towards the end of TS time, when we were hearing about how he was stifling certain young players' natural game and so on.

So it's harder for a coach to impose order because also the players can react in a passive-aggressive way by just stopping putting in the effort. They know that losses are the fastest way to remove a coach, and even though players get stick, usually the coach is the lightning rod for most of it.

A coach has to be very skilled at dealing with this and the old "schoolteacher" type is less effective - even in football, look what happened to Van Gaal and Mourinho at United. Sir Alex Ferguson was able to get away with it because he had a track record of success from before the social media era, which made his position unarguable.

I suppose Klopp is a good example now of how to manage players. It comes down to him also being a very good manager who can create a team which looks fun to play in and wins. He then has the leverage of choosing who stays and who goes, so if players don't come in line, he doesn't have to have a big battle with them, he can just quietly move them on, and nobody wants to lose the chance to play for this team right now.

In RL, I think Wane and McDermott would be well placed to impose discipline. They both have track records of winning Super League which gives them authority, and they are both guys who seem like they are good blokes who would look after players' welfare and wouldn't be bullies. But you know that both of them are tough guys who won't tolerate an inch of crap.

Should Toronto beat Saints...,
I think it’s technically possible that Wite could be bottom of the league next week.

Ok it’s a big if...but how can we find ourselves in this mess.

As an outside observer, I very much doubt getting rid of Price is the solution. He won a trophy last year ffs.
I know you've stayed there season really poorly, but the Saints performabce shows what they are capable of. I've heard Price is one of the hardest working coaches in SL. I think unfortunately you have a few players with pretty big ego's who seem more interested on telling people how many pairs of trainers they have.....
Reflects modern society really, so I admit I have some sympathy for the v players too.
An interview by Wilkin really got my goat last year what he was blaming g Saints and the RFL for not promoting his cafe, or making a big deal about the footwear y thing I've alluded to. I just thought What??

..,,your mist probably right that getting arid of Price is the solution, but it’s a penalty for failure. 2 very different things.
We can give the interim coach our support while he tried to fix the mess. If he can’t I’ll not hold him responsible.

It's not the start of this season, go back to last seasons results and see how we performed since about July, taken out the cup games and its even worse, even before then we were dire but managed to win games. We went from challenging saints and we'll clear of 3rd to scraping 5th to get in the playoffs and then getting stuffed first round! He should have gone ages ago before this season even started. Right now we are getting what we deserve for not replacing him after the end of last season.

I think there is a bit of this in why Wane was so successful at Wigan.... he coached alot of those players from kids... he had been tough with them and they had been winners... so when it came to first team rugby it was a default setting for alot of those players.... thats how they had been brought up.

Put him in control of a team full of players he hasn't ever had influence on and i dont think he can be like he was at Wigan.

Grown men cant be bullied these days. (for alot of the reasons you went into).... its just how things are.

The Bosman ruling changed all of sport in that respect... players now have the power.... if they dont like a coach, then they just dont perform.

price is suffering from this as he simply cant motivate the players..... his tactics might be great, his play book might be amazing..... players dont want him though.

Isn’t there a middle ground, high expectations without bullying?

The problem is, those same players that didn’t perform will get back into the team again next week. THAT’S when the players have the power.

If Price came on after the game and said ‘X didn’t play a great game tonight. I’m going to give him a fortnight at Widnes to get back to his best.’ The players might not like it but they’d start showing him their respect.

It's too late for price unfortunately. We have won 5 of our last 18 superleague games (including the playoff defeat v cas). Even if you include the cup games 7 from 20 is still awful! That includes a run with 6 defeats on the run. I can't understand how anybody at the club finds that acceptable? How it wasn't deemed that a change was needed at the end of the season I will never know. What do the board actually view as failure?

They would probably sulk and we'd soon hear grumblings about him 'losing the dressing room' if senior players with allies in the dressing room got that sort of humiliation.

Also if you leave big names out, who comes in?
Price was criticised for playing Keenan Brand, "throwing him to the lions".
If he sends a signal by shipping off some big names to Widnes for 2 weeks, some kids come out who are way out of their depth and we then get shallacked, and all the fans are calling for the big names to come back...who wins that encounter? It just demonstrates the leverage that the senior players have.

What Price could do, is act tough with the younger players, but not the senior players, which is what Millward was like at Saints.

Yep, and it could well be that Price picked up this discord amongst whoever these senior players are, and made arrangements to ship them off for a month.

And it could well be that the board overruled Price in this and told him to coach the team.

And so it could be a standoff developed between Price and the Board resulting in a Mexican Standoff, and who’s going to blink first.

The board may be waiting for Price to resign, losing his payoff, and he’s waiting for the sack and his payoff. icon_biggrin.gif

Pi55ing and moaning aside - the club need to take action. It’s a business and needs strong leadership at the top to bring about change.
