| Quote: The Angry Pirate "Whilst signing Myler would be something of a gamble, the fact remains that if Wire, or more accurately Simon Moran, can afford it, then he is no bigger a gamble than any other half back we may decide to go after.
As for those questioning his experience??...Well, a certain Lee Briers was a virtual novice when we signed him up....Yes, there was very little cost to his transfer, but the risk factor involved with him was probably greater than it is for Myler, and whether you are a fan of Briers or not, it cannot be argued that he has been a good servant to the club.
Ultimately, if Simon Moran decides he has enough spare cash going from his Oasis promotions and he fancies a punt on a potentially future great, then I think we should just let him take that so-called gamble...
In a weird way, the fee we paid for Briers was probably a bigger financial risk than what we'd end up paying now for Myler. As in, the club in 1997 had to sell Harris & Sculthorpe to survive, by spending £65,000 on Briers, it was a big investment for a club that was struggling to survive.
Also, there's little risk, as he can't be any worse than Sullivan & Monaghan who will have both commanded large salaries and have failed to deliver. It's not like he has big boots to fill.

| I think we should go for the lad and pay what he wants im fed up of the wire way of getting players from oz that tell us they want to play half back and paying top money for them.lets go out and take a chance on good english talent like we did when we got briers and as long as us fans give the boy time to develop am sure it will be money well spent, imho

Your second paragraph is absolutely spot on. People are starting to come out of the woodwork now stating that he is over-rated because we are being linked, but he really can;t be any worse than the dross we have had the last couple of times. I think he is a better player than Monas is right now, never mind in the future.
When people talk about transfer fees, I couldn't care less. We look to be financially strong, despite this tax bill that was going to bankrupt us a few months back, and if the club decide they can afford it then fine. If that means an extra £1 per ticket, then that's also fine by me. It is good that we are in for the big names in the game now.

| Myler may be a risk but no more of a risk than say Eastmond was/is for Saints, but who better to have as his coach than Tony Smith?

I am sorry if this has already been posted, but Myler has turned down Salford’s offer!!!
Martin Offiah has cited that Salford have made him an offer that he has rejected.
Reference to this is at the following link:
news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_l ... 113190.stm
Assuming Salford doesn’t come back with a revised offer, then it looks like he could be on his way to Warrington. However, rumour has it that Saints have put in a £220+k bid for him…

| Quote: Coops "Myler may be a risk but no more of a risk than say Eastmond was/is for Saints, but who better to have as his coach than Tony Smith?'" The difference in the risk level though is the money involved, Eastmond came through our system so there will have been no transfer fees involved, and I think its a pretty safe bet that he is on nowhere near the money that Myler will be after at whichever club he ends up at.
So he is a bigger risk, if a player fails (which is always a possibility) then surely its better for their to only be a small amount of money being risked on them than large amounts of money.
That said, on the pitch he is probably less of a risk simply because he is more proven - whether at this stage in his career he is worth splashing the amounts of money being mentioned on his debatable but obviously the clubs interested think its an investment worth making.

So, setting the money aside for a second. You're claiming that moving from Salford to Warrington is a step backwards as far as his future is concerned?
Bringing the money back into it, how do you know that Warrington, wigan, Saints or wherever he ends up are offering more money than Salfords best paid player ever offer.
Strikes me as there is a little involved.

| I must admit that I've not seen enough from Myler to give me the confidence that this would be as great a signing as some people think. Having said that, a quick head-head stats comparison on superleague.co.uk with Super League's other scrum halves generally shows Myler to be one of the best. Tbh, only Michael Dobson looks better. It does highlight that Myler needs to focus on his defence though as total tackles, marker tackles and missed tackles are a little below average.
