Quote: Deano G "Are you seriously saying Swinton are similar in fame and history to Souths?

Well,

1. They've both not won anything for decades
2, Their clubs both lead 'gypsy' lives, without having a home to call their own, in the last few years
3. Their respective coaches will have received 'a dicking' from Warrington, in the last few months
4. They both still think themselves as 'famous'

There's four to be getting on with, for starters.

Keep digging

Your nearly beginning to make yourself look even sadder than you did over the Gareth Thomas 'homosexual chants' affair, a couple of years ago.

now THAT was embarrassing.... I just don't take any notice anymore.

Sometimes i go on the wigan forum to browse a few posts that might be of interest and everytime i see him post he is talking about warrington.

Quote: Deano G "Sadly many fans in this country are just fans of their own club rather than being RL fans who support a particular club.'"

Loads of RL fans everywhere are fans of RL as a whole. I wouldn't say that is just a trait of Wigan fans, you just know more Wigan fans to judge that off.

I'm from Manchester and always been a huge RL fan (as well as City seasoncard holder for many years) but i didn't 'support' any RL club in my youth, there isn't a Manchester team (why i'll never know!) [Salford really isolate themselves from being Mancunian]. It wasn't until i went to do my degree in Warrington and did my work placement at the Wire and got quite involved in them being my team (i lived in Warrington from 2000-2003) that i had a club. Now i'm back in Trafford but i'm still a Wire fan and still a huge RL fan (i'm always banging the RL drum in a city that really doesn't take to RL [f?ck knows why?!?!]). Boxing and MMA are probably more widely particiapated than RL in Mcr.

But i'm sure there are a huge proportion of RL fans of all clubs who have a big interest in RL from all over the globe. I watch a lot of the NRL. It's a fantastic level of competition. It makes our game over here seem like Championship 1 to Super League. Yes, Souths are a hugely historical club and have won many titles but they won the majority of them were in joke times of competiton. They still won them of course, Balmain didn't win as many as Souths but Wests are still considered a big club so Souths are obviously too. Wire didn't have that green/red away kit last season by coincidence!

Probably because they're not Mancunian (although oddly quite a lot of them support either City or United, go figure).

You're right, they don't consider themselves Mancunian. Although their city centre is Manchester city centre and we are all the same people, but hey?! That's what they think so i wont go against it. But what gets my goat is that Salford City Reds have mentioned in a few aspects of their both SL applications (potential support and potential player pool) "the Manchester connurbation". Now i work in a Wythenshawe (in Mcr) school and have not seen or heard from Salford City Reds once; i live in Trafford and have never seen any local advertising or outreach for Salford City Reds once; i spent a lot of time in Mcr city centre and you wouldn't know Salford City Reds existed...

Anyway that's completely off topic, sorry!

Well not strictly true, they don't have a city centre as such (Salford precinct is a desolate horrible place), but that doesn't make Manchester "their city centre", it's just the nearest 'traditional' city centre to them.

They have indeed often said that 'Manchester' is a bit catchment area for them, and indeed it is, but they need to actually go out and do some work to take advantage of it for it to mean anything.

Are you serious? icon_confused.gif

Swinton as famous and historic a club in Britain as Souths are in Oz? Eh?

To compare their fame is laughable - has anyone outside RL circles even heard of Swinton?

As for history, well Swinton are an old club (not founder members of the RL though) and they have won titles but even on the history they can't compare with Souths pre 1970 and they certainly can't in the last 40 years, where although Souths haven't been successful they have been a top flight side for almost all that period unlike Swinton.

They're biting early, today
I only threw in a bit of groundbait, and I managed to reel a cherry'n'white troll, using only a worm and a 5lb line. Should I tell Angling Times?

Swinton was an analogy brought up by biscuit, and they do have some comparisons with Souths.

ATEOTD, you're just bigging-up a club you have no leanings to, save for your current coach going there, next year.

There's a famous line, spoken by Harold Shand (Bob Hoskins), in one of the best films of all time (imo) The Long Good Friday, which can equate to Souths being 'sleeping giants'
"Ive heard of a sleeping partner (giant), but you lot are in a f@@@ing coma"

Getting a previously third tier coach, and a Hollywood actor as an owner, does not make you a 'major player' in the NRL

Well, somebody might be interested next season, if cracks are getting bigger.

However, there will always be lingering doubts about his methods of gaining success, and his hollering antics on Sunday simply added fuel to the theory that he is a 'win-at-all-costs' type of guy.....Yes, to some that will be a positive quality, but to some it is an unlikeable trait that doesn't need to be promoted in the manner that he does.

On a footballing level, he is the despised Don Revie ....Very successful, but not fondly remembered, because he made his teams snarl, instead of purr their way to glory.'"

oi, leave Don Revie out of it!
