| Now announced on BBC.
Super League clubs vote for marquee player rule from 2016
Super League clubs have voted for a marquee player rule to come into force in 2016, which will allow teams to make top signings with part of their finances outside the salary cap.
The proposal, twice rejected, was approved at the league's Annual General Meeting in Manchester on Wednesday.
Currently the cap of £1.85m per club must cover the salaries of the whole playing squad.
Salford owner Marwan Koukash tweeted: "Fantastic day for Super League."
Clubs in Super League, such as Salford and Warrington, have been keen to bring in a marquee player rule in order to attract top talent from the National Rugby League in Australia and New Zealand, as well as retain the best players amid interest from the NRL and rugby union.

What gulf? There's 6 points separating 4th and 10th.

| So the marquee player ruling will come in from 2016, so if Leigh come up to SL for example with a marquee player signed for next season on say a 2 year contract, what will happen to them, the player & his increased salary if they go straight back down to the championship ? Will the player automatically transfer to the club taking their place i wonder.

I'm certain the player wont just transfer to the club coming up, most contracts had get outs following relegation when SL had a 1 up 1 down policy in the past - I assume the same would happen again.
On the SL website it says the club must [i'meet clearly-defined affordability criteria based around their income and expenditure'[/i Why can't Championship clubs have this in place too? As long as the club could prove that they could afford its marquee player exemption. Doesn't seem fair otherwise?

| Think I speak for most on here when I say I'll be pretty disappointed if we don't have a top class, international HB from the NRL in our line up next year.

953.jpg 2015 - major missed opportunity, 2016 - stronger teams = harder task (no problem there then), 2017 - OMG What now!!!:953.jpg |
|
| So an overseas player would still take almost 10% of your SC. Don't see much benefit here.

| I dont think its just about paying a super star ££££ but also frees up more cash to spread around to the other players, could be the differance the keeping a good youngster at the club,
Take Rory's £200k+ salary only having £150k on the cap would free up another 70-80k

| With the exception of Matt King, I can't recall a single overseas signing in my 30-odd years of watching Wires who we have had [igenuine[/i value for money from who would qualify as a marquee signing, in terms of prestige, ability, profile and star status.
On the other hand, those that [iwould[/i have qualified under those criteria have generally been total let-downs and resembled Dick Turpin in NRL clothing.

| i dont think anyone will be going out and offering daft money to a superstar.... i think this probably allows us a little bit of salary cap slack to bring in a player wouldn't have been in a position to previously.
Im not clued up on the NRL really, so dont have a great knowledge of the players in it... However, I am expecting this rule to enable us to bring in someone, probably a HB, who will be arguably the leading player in the league in that position... Something we are crying out for.
