| ...as effective as the wheel used to navigate that ship stuck in the Suez Canal.
What is it with our coaches inability to pick a bench capable of contributing to a full 80 mins of Rugby?
Danny Walker plays 15 mins... not seen again, Ashton plays 10 mins at the end. Last year we had a bench containing players that didn't even play!
You don't have to be a coaching genius to realise that the modern game is a 17 a-side affair...with the interchanges a vital part of keeping the intensity for the full 80mins. The best Tony Smith teams had a full bench of players that would contribute to half the game.
Is it simply the fact that our squad isn't sufficiently good enough to pick a strong 17 man squad capable of contributing to a full game?

| No, price is out of his depth. Doesn't know what to do at all.

| One prop, a hooker, a lose forward and a back just doesn’t cut it for me. Too lightweight yet again and we got bullied.
Personally, I would have Philbin and Mulhern coming off the bench, along with with Doro or Butler. 4th spot is up for grabs...

yep, totally agree with you... it was obvious to anyone with half a rugby brain that Castleford would use their big forwards to try and dominate our pack and create a platform. We couldn't match them and a big part of that was an ineffective bench.

We play Hull and Catalans after Leigh. Two mongrel packs against our pussycats should be interesting.

| How many minutes did Walker play? There was a comment from Price about D Clark having not trained (he didn't actually say injured) which might go some way to explaining why he didn't start against Cas but he seems to have come through ok. I would therefore start with D Clark and use Davis, if confirmed fit, off the bench,
I'm not a fan of Philbin at 13, I'd be far happier starting with J Clark and Philbin coming off the bench, but I can't see Price admitting defeat on that score this early on.
Wrench made some errors and Charnley had something of a mare but dropping them both and bringing in a entirely new partnership, i.e. Mamo and Ashton, would be a big gamble.
I think 2 changes to the 17. Mamo and Davis in, Walker and either Wrench or Charnley out.

As someone as already said on here Philbin may as well have 'impact sub' printed on his forehead so what does Price do?
Ashton should be starting at fullback and Ratchford should be playing 13.
Mamo doesn't seem to put a foot wrong when he plays and always looks dangerous so he must be really bad in training if we're throwing a 19 year old in on debut like a lamb to the slaughter like we did with Brand last season.

| Didn’t we start Ashton at fullback in the challenge cup semi v Salford and tried to squeeze Ratchford, Austin and Widdop into 6, 7 & 13? We all know how that ended but agree Ashton needs game time.

I wouldn't be averse to trying it again and certainly wouldn't use the semi against Salford as the yardstick.
A close game that we should have closed out but didn't and I don't think that the line up affected this, we just never broke clear and they were always in it .The game was played in tricky conditions yes it was the same for both teams so no complaints on that score. We had an uncharacteristic error from one of our few bright performers and in the last couple of seasons our only win against them was a 24 0 gimme no matter who we picked.
The only game where we came out with any positive recently was the one where we played the kids and a close defeat.

| I don’t dig Ashton on the wing.
For all Charnley’s faults his numbers are great and he’s still a top finisher. Ashton is not big enough to be a winger. He’s perfect for the fullback role where has that space to return the ball and use his footwork and then also support players in our attacks.

But Ashton at FB disrupts Ratchford which disrupts the halves.
Charnley was all over the place at the weekend and his performances have been flatlining for some time now.

| It has been a long time since Charnley presented a threat in attack, now there maybe all sorts of reasons for that but it is worry.

I thought that after the game. We put Wrench in against Shenton in the first game of the season where a win is desperately needed to build momentum and played Brand against Hurrell in his debut. I'm happy we blood youngsters, honestly, but surely there's a slightly better way of doing it, especially of you have Mamo as an alternative. The Brand move in particular was a very very questionable selection
